Square-Enix: Online Growth Ahead
Posted by: Cuer - Fri Jun 24th, 2005 03:32 pm EDT
A recent report at CVG offers information from Square-Enix's shareholder meeting.
Japanese superstar publisher Square Enix has emphasised that online gaming is the way forward for its RPG-heavy titles and has stated that every console in the future will feature full online capabilities, according to statements emerging from the company's shareholder meeting. Discussing revenue plans for the coming year, Square Enix warned that profits could suffer as the current generation of consoles gives way to the next-gen, but assured shareholders that investment in online gaming now would offer great returns in the long run.

To achieve this long-term profit, SquEnix is already growing its online sector faster than the market actually needs so that it is at the forefront when more and more players get the ability to play online.

SquEnix has already had success in the online sector, with Final Fantasy XI on PC and PS2 snatching the publisher a 50% share of the massively multiplayer market in Japan. According to Square, FFXI has also "beaten EverQuest in America" and is "doing well in Europe."

Other topics of discussion were Final Fantasy XII on PS2, expected to finally launch next year and sell 3 to 4 million copies in Japan; The next instalment in the massively popular Dragon Quest franchise, which was neatly ducked by the SquEnix spokespeople; and ex-Square golden child Hironobu Sakaguchi's new Mistwalker studio, which evidently has absolutely no financial connection to Square Enix.

PlayOnline: Development News - June 2005
Posted by: Mirriam - Thu Jun 23rd, 2005 02:21 am EDT
From the Official FFXI Site (June 30):

Changes to Utsusemi and Ranged Attacks

The next version update will make battle more strategic for players who use Utsusemi or ranged attacks.

*Changes to the ninjutsu "Utsusemi"
In the next update, the player's enmity will decrease when a shadow image created by Utsusemi is absorbed by an attack.

*Changes to Ranged Attacks
Soon, the distance of the monster from the player will determine the damage and accuracy of ranged attacks. This determination will vary from weapon to weapon, as will the ideal distance for maximum damage. In addition, the higher the monster's level is with regard to the player, the less damage will be dealt with a ranged attack. This system is similar to that of melee attacks, but the difference in damage will not be as great.

A score of new material and exciting new improvements awaits in the next version update in mid-July, so keep checking this site for details as the time approaches!

From the Official FFXI Site (June 28):

Bundling Ninja Tools and More!

After the next version update, you will be able to bundle your stacks of ninja tools! We will also be adding storage capabilities for a recently added suit of armor, and increasing the number of items that you can obtain by exchanging conquest points!

Bundling ninja tools, an addition to the storable equipment list, and new items earned by conquest points!

All this and more are coming up in the next version update in mid-July.

*Bundling Stacks of Ninja Tools
Similar to quivers, players will soon be able to bundle multiple stacks of 99 ninja tools as one item. The player can accumulate 12 stacks of 99 ninja tools in one item slot. In short, players will be able to carry twelve times more ninja tools in each slot than before!

*Equipment Storage
There is an NPC that players can talk to in order to have special equipment stored as a Key Item. This frees up inventory space for more items. Soon, Mythril Plate Armor will be added to the list of storable equipment.

*New Items Earned by Conquest Points
The Return Ring and the Homing Ring will be added to the list of items that can be obtained through exchanging conquest points.

Keep checking this section for more exciting news regarding July's version update!

From the Official FFXI Site (June 24):

Enemy Locations in Crowded Areas to Change

Recently, FFXI's incredible popularity has led to a population boom! The introduction of the Merit Point system and the rapid increase in the number of missions and quests have also increased the traffic in several select areas.

In order to allow everyone room to engage in battles to their heart's content, the FFXI development team will be adjusting enemy locations in the next version update. The bulk of the changes will be to areas from the newest expansion pack, "Chains of Promathia." These adjustments will give players more freedom when choosing where to battle.

The next version update is currently in the testing phase, so look forward to experiencing it soon!

From the Official FFXI Site (June 22):

Thrilling New Quests on the Horizon!

Adventurers, take up your swords and staves! A plethora of action-packed quests is currently in the works for the upcoming FINAL FANTASY XI version update.

The following is a sample of the excitement that awaits:

*A quest requiring adventurers to deliver a lost chocobo to its home stables. Test your riding skills while competing for jaw-dropping prizes and the title of "Vana'diel's Fastest"!

*Quests to obtain masks designed after your favorite beastmen. Only those who obtain the unique headwear will be able to unlock the equipment's true power...

And that is only the beginning! Keep your eyes glued to this page for the latest in update information!

FFXI Producer Interview: Possible PS3 Version and New Jobs/Spells
Posted by: Cuer - Thu Jun 09th, 2005 03:29 pm EDT
In an interview by Final Fantasy XI producer Hiromichi Tanaka with the popular Japanese electronic gaming magazine Famitsu, some interesting information was provided. A news item on GameSpot has info about the mention of a new MMORPG in development, by one of Tanaka's development teams:
In an interview published in the latest issue of Famitsu magazine, Final Fantasy XI producer Hiromichi Tanaka disclosed that his development team is currently working on a new massively multiplayer role-playing game for next-generation consoles.

Tanaka declined to comment on whether the MMORPG in development will be a successor to FFXI or a new product. He did confirm that the technical demonstration shown for the Xbox 360 during E3 was one of the experiments his development team had created to see what kind of graphics a next-generation console could achieve.

Tanaka also disclosed that the Xbox 360 edition of FFXI will sport graphics of a quality similar to the currently available PC version of FFXI. However, he added that the development team is seeing if the Xbox 360 can display graphics for about twice the distance than the Windows version.

The game's beta test is slated to begin simultaneously with the launch of the Xbox 360 later this year. Similarly to the Windows beta, the Xbox 360's beta test will be conducted on servers separate from the rest of the FFXI world. One of the main objectives for the Xbox 360 version's beta testing is to see if there are any problems with the game's network environment, since this will be the first time Xbox Live will be allowing a connection from an external system.
Further information is provided from GameIndustry.biz, including the possibility of a PS3 version of FFXI, assuming Sony puts a hard drive standard in the next generation console:
On the massively multiplayer side of things, FFXI producer Hiromichi Tanaka was equally evasive - admitting that his team is working on a new MMORPG for next-generation platforms, but declining to give any further details. He did, however, admit that the tech demo shown off at Microsoft's pre-E3 conference was one of the team's experiments with next-gen graphics, which tends to suggest that Xbox 360 is seen as a target platform for the game.

One might reasonably expect PlayStation 3 to be the other target platform, but Tanaka seems perturbed by rumblings from Sony which suggest that the hard drive may not be included as standard with the console.

He told Famitsu that he was surprised to hear that Sony is considering shipping without a hard drive, saying that unless broadband connections are suddenly upgraded to fibre optic speeds, the PS3 will need a hard drive in order to support the kind of character development required by massively multiplayer games.
Other reports based on this interview provide more, possibly accurate information about the development for FFXI. In CVG Online, it is mentioned that there will be new jobs and possibly spells added.
According to Tanaka-san, there will be new spells, new jobs, and a whole bunch of other additional content in the game, as well as double the draw distance of the current PC version. A beta test is said to be starting soon too, though how exactly this is going to work without lots of Xbox 360s is as yet undisclosed.
This is mentioned as well in the XboxAddict news account of the interview:
Hiromichi-san claimed that the 360 version will offer a draw-distance twice that of the PC version, and will feature an assortment of new content such as jobs and the possibility of new Summon magic spells.
Any possible additions of jobs or spells are no doubt features that will be provided in Final Fantasy XI's bi-monthly patches or the currently unnamed expansion. It is highly unlikely that there would be such additions to the Xbox 360 version specifically, given the stated desire by Square-Enix to keep the content as similar as possible across the platforms.
