Kamp Kweh -- A place where adventurers can bring their chocobos to interact with others, as well as view the conditions of the other participants’ animals is now open for business.

The Chocobo Hot and Cold Game -- A new treasure-hunting activity for chocobos and their owners has been introduced.

December 2006 FFXI Patch

A new quest to obtain the new chocobo ability “treasure finder” has been introduced. This ability will increase a chocobo’s ability to locate treasure when playing the Chocobo Hot and Cold Game.

Two new beneficial statuses “bursting with vitality” and “sparkling with intelligence” have been added. When a chocobo is affected by these, not only will training programs yield better results, but the chocobo will also be more receptive to physical and mental stimulation.

Previously, a chocobo being in love would only negatively affect the success rate of its training. However, now this status will sometimes benefit the chocobo.

When taking your chocobo for a walk, it may now find items for you.

Changes to Besieged

Players can now earn limit points by participating in Besieged.

When players are transported out of Al Zahbi due to player number restrictions, all HP-draining status effects will be removed.

An issue where, under rare circumstances, players who were KO’d during a siege of Al Zahbi lost experience points has been addressed.

Mog Locker capacity has been increased to 70 items.

Several new quests originating in the Treasures of Ah Urhgan area are now available.

Players can now confirm the Ashu Talif quest offer status by speaking with the NPC who originally accepted the offer.

The timing at which several Aht Urhgan mission events become available for viewing via the event replay feature has been adjusted.

Transportation to Tu’Lia

After meeting certain requirements, players will now be able to teleport to Tu’Lia from the Hall of Transference located within the spires of Holla, Dem, and Mea.

[Battle-Related]

Monster placement has been adjusted in the following areas: Bhaflau Thickets, Alzadaal Undersea Ruins, Caedarva Mire

The following paladin abilities/traits have been adjusted:

Sentinel
The effect of Sentinel will be changed from an increase in defense to straight damage mitigation.
Also, all actions taken while Sentinel is in effect will generate additional enmity, allowing the paladin to more easily gain and maintain an enemy’s attention.

Rampart
In addition to the defense bonus granted to party members within the area of effect, Rampart will now also provide a “Magic Shield” that will absorb a certain amount of magic damage in the same manner as the spell “Stoneskin.”

Shield Mastery
In addition to granting a TP bonus, the Shield Mastery job trait will also prevent interruption to spell casting when an enemy’s attack is blocked with a shield.

The casting time for all Absorb spells has been reduced from four seconds to two.

Blue Magic

Several new spells have been added, as well as the corresponding terms for the auto translate dictionary.

The following spells have been adjusted:
*The recast time for Filamented Hold and Chaotic Eye have been reduced
*The recast/casting time for Infrasonics has been reduced
*The recast time and MP required for casting Frightful Roar has been reduced.

Corsair Adjustments

A new job trait "Rapid Shot" has been added.

Quick Draw Accuracy
A corsair’s AGI will now affect the accuracy of Quick Draw. This will make it possible to improve the accuracy of Quick Draw by increasing the relevant attributes.

Quick Draw Recast Time
The recast time for Quick Draw will be reduced from 3 minutes to 1 minute.
In accordance with this change, the Group 1 merit point ability Quick Draw Recast will now reduce recast time by 2 seconds instead of 6 seconds.

Light Shot and Dark Shot
Light Shot and Dark Shot will be changed to have the following enfeebling effects instead of inflicting damage:

Light Shot: Sleep
Dark Shot: Dispel

*The Quick Draw additional effect of increasing the potency of enfeebling effects will remain unchanged.

December 2006 FFXI Patch
Puppetmaster Adjustments

New high-level automaton weapon skills have been added.

New synthesis/desynthesis recipes have been added.

The names of the following items have been changed:

sagacious cotton obi -> sagacious brocade obi
enthralling cotton obi -> enthralling brocade obi
deductive cotton obi -> deductive brocade obi

[System-Related]

Fellows will no longer disappear when changing areas or logging back in. However, a fellow cannot follow a player into an area where he/she cannot be called.

A new text command [/ignorepet] will also be introduced that will allow you to ignore the pets of others, including automatons, avatars, and charmed monsters.
The text command can be used in the following way:

/ignorepet: Displays current status when no subcommand is specified

In areas where use of a support job is limited, players will no longer be able to take advantage of certain support jobs’ wide scan abilities.

An issue concerning the font color of the auction house listing of woozyshrooms has been fixed.

Several new terms have been added to the auto translation feature.

Game Terms Salvage
Game Terms Mog Locker
Text Commands /ignorepet

Due to the extreme popularity of the kraken club and trouble arising as a result of a large number of players attempting to acquire the item, the monster that previously dropped the club (Lord of Onzozo) will do so no longer. A new method of obtaining the item is currently under consideration and will be implemented shortly. There are no plans on changing the drop rate of the item in question. However, the development team would like to grant players more opportunities to obtain it.

The Starlight Celebration!

Starlight Celebration: Treant Trouble

Starlight Celebration

The dazzling events of the Starlight Celebration are drawing to a close, but you still might catch the festivities if you hurry!
What ever happened to those towering treants terrorizing the towns, you ask...?

*The Starlight Celebration will end on Dec. 31, 2006 (Sunday) 7:00 (PST).

Master, Master!
The Starlight Celebration is here again, kupo!

Starlight Celebration

The lights! The sweets! The presents!
Just thinking about the fun keeps me awake all night, kupo!

............Ummm...
......Hrmmm............
Alright, you got me! I just can't keep a secret away from my favorite adventurer...

As you already know, the Starlight Celebration will begin in a few days. But what you don't know is that we Moogles are in a pickle, kupo. The trees that we had made for this year's festivities have vanished from Windurst! And what's worse, a terrifying treant has suddenly shown up at the Dhalmel Farm and is wreaking havoc on the locals, kupo!

Come to think of it, I haven't heard from my brothers and sisters working in Bastok and San d'Oria. What if there are crazy trees running amok in their towns as well...?

Starlight Celebration

Wait a minute... Treants in the towns...?
Didn't something like this happen a few years ago? There was some kind of freak accident at the Rhinostery in Windurst, right? If this is the same thing, we're in biiig trouble!

Anyway, as long as these freaks of nature are trouncing about our towns, everybody will be too scared to come out and take part in the Starlight Celebration's festivities, kupo! Even the smilebringers have said that they won't pass out their presents until they're sure the children will be safe.

Starlight Celebration

Ah, what to do? What to do!?
The treant won't go away, kupo!

Well, I guess it has come down to this...
My colleagues and I must take up arms to protect the city from fear!
Oh, don't worry. We'll do all the work. But, we sure could use a cheer or two from our humble masters, kupo!

PlayOnline: Empire's Most Wanted 2
Posted by: Cuer - Tue Dec 05th, 2006 06:29 am EST

From the Official FFXI Site (December 5):

Empire's Most Wanted 2

Empire's Most Wanted 2

Even among the beastmen, the creatures listed below are especially notorious for their crimes against the Empire. All competent mercenaries and adventurers are encouraged to aid in their elimination.

Cerberus
Cerberus

In recent months, numerous reports from mercenaries infiltrating the Troll stronghold of Halvung have indicated the presence of a sinister-looking three-headed canine of cyclopean proportions. Those who have mustered the courage to challenge the hell-spawned daemon in mortal combat tell spine-tingling tales of an impenetrable sable hide, and rows of armor-piercing jaws dripping endlessly with the blood and bile of countless victims...

Intelligence has also gathered that this creature might actually be the hunting dog of Troll mercenary captain Gurfurlur. If this is true, then it may not be long before the savages deploy it during one of their raids on Al Zahbi. We ask that all able-bodied mercenaries take up arms against this threat to the empire.

Hydra
Hydra

Recently, the lone survivor of a missing volunteer unit returned to Al Zahbi with an unbelievable story of a three-headed dragon that attacked his companions while they were on a mission deep within the Wajoam Woodlands. Though they fought gallantly, their mauls and magicks were no match for the Tartarean wyrm's thick, squamous hide, and it was only a matter of moments before the mephitic miasma that poured from its gaping maws scorched the lungs of the ill-fated warriors.

While ancient tomes indicate that the Hydra is an independent beast that roams the outlands of its own will, the interrogation of a Mamool Ja spy revealed that the reptilian horde has been attempting to tame the dragon by luring it to their training grounds with the raw flesh of their prisoners. If they are successful in soothing the savage beast, they may soon learn a way to utilize it in battle, thus spelling doom for the Empire's armies. All high-level mercenaries are recommended to enroll immediately in eradication expeditions.

Khimaira
Khimaira

Travelers to Halvung and Hediva Isle have brought back with them strange tales of a hideous beast roaming the volcanic terrain. However, the differing reports have Imperial schoolmen scratching their heads in disbelief. Some adventurers speak of the twisted horn of a giant ram, while others the golden mane of a lion. Still others speak of a pair of undersized bat-like wings or a spiked reptilian tail imbued with deadly venom. One crazed old man even mumbled of a deep violet hide, not unlike that of the dreaded behemoth.

Until more information can be gathered on the abhorration, the Empire has bestowed upon it the name Khimaira, and is actively searching for mercenaries who might be willing to hunt down this elusive beast.

Finally, the Empire would like to address the rumors that the Khimaira is in fact a byproduct of a secret Imperial bioweapon engineering program. These accusations have no basis, and any person(s) caught spreading these malicious falsities may be tried under Imperial laws of treason.

PlayOnline Development News: Nov-Dec 2006
Posted by: Cuer - Wed Nov 22nd, 2006 03:25 pm EST

From the Official FFXI Site (December 15):
December FFXI Update

New Multiplayer Battlefields: Salvage

The Aht Urhgan expansion pack has introduced a myriad of new battles--from the quick, SWAT-style Assault missions to the citywide skirmishes experienced in Besieged. Salvage continues in this tradition by offering several new exploratory missions designed for alliances. While similar to Limbus battles in that up to 18 adventurers can participate, Salvage battles are more than a relentless assault on a seemingly never-ending wave of enemies—they will require precise teamwork and impeccable strategy to complete.

Salvage Battles

Objective

The main objective of Salvage missions is the exploration of the archaeological remains of four newly opened areas (Zhayolm Remnants, Arrapago Remnants, Bhaflau Remnants, Silver Sea Remnants) and the eradication the demonic beasts that rule their deepest depths. However, this will not be as easy as it sounds. A powerful force known only as the Pathos of Alzadaal limits the abilities of all who enter, making them easy prey for the hordes of fiends waiting in the shadows. To complete these missions, alliances must work as one, or the treasure that slumbers in the remnants' bowels will remain lost for eternity.

Salvage Battles

Participation

Salvage Battles

Adventurers must be level 65 or above, and be in a party/alliance of between 6 to 18 players. There are no mission rank or mercenary rank requirements.

Remnants Permits

In addition to meeting the aforementioned criteria, adventurers also must possess a "remnants permit." This key item can be obtained in exchange for Assault points (2000) and will grant entry to any one of the four remnants. Please note that a permit can only be used once, and adventurers must wait until midnight (Earth time) before they will be allowed to purchase another.

Area Reservation

Unlike Dynamis or Limbus, Salvage uses a battle system similar to Assault, meaning that area reservations are not required.
Also, Salvage mission time limits are all set at 100 minutes, and there are no items or monsters that can extend that limit.

The Pathos of Alzadaal

When adventurers begin a Salvage mission, they may have as many as 20 different limits hampering their abilities, equipment, attributes, and more. The only way to reach the guardian of the area and retrieve its treasure is to remove these limits. However, removing these limits requires the defeat of the other monsters roaming the remnants.
The following is a list of the various types of Pathos:

Salvage Battles

Imbued Items
The Pathos of Alzadaal can only be neutralized with special potions and medicines known as "imbued items." Most of these items are pathos-specific and will only cure one ailment. They can be found on monsters or within treasure coffers hidden throughout the remains. One of the keys for success in the Salvage missions is determining in which order members of the alliance receive the imbued items.

*Players must dispose of any imbued items they bring back from the remains before they will be allowed to enter again.

December FFXI Update

Chocobo Raising Changes and Additions

Several new additions are in the works for December's version update. Here is a sample of what is in store:

Kamp Kweh

Kamp Kweh is a place where adventurers can bring their chocobos to interact with others, as well as view the conditions of the other participants' animals.

Chocobo Raising

Chocobo Hot and Cold Game

Now, treasure-hungry adventurers from around Vana'diel can use their very own chocobos to hunt for buried loot in the Chocobo Hot and Cold Game. From chocobo digging pros to newcomers, this exciting new event has something for everyone!

How to Participate
First speak to one of the VCS representatives stationed in Bastok, San d'Oria, or Windurst. After an explanation of the rules, the representative will give you a chocograph with the name of several areas on it, as well as a clump of Tandjana wildgrass, used to call your chocobo in the field.
*Your chocobo must be registered before participating.
*You must possess the maps of the areas listed on the chocographs.
*After using a clump of Tandjana wildgrass, you must let your chocobo rest 24 hours before receiving a new one.

How to Play
1. Use the Tandjana wildgrass in one of the areas designated on your chocograph.
2. Once your chocobo arrives, your map will open and a marker (???) will indicate the general location of a hidden treasure coffer.
3. Ride your chocobo to the vicinity of the marker and dig. Depending on the relative distance you are from the coffer, your chocobo will react differently.
4. Your chocobo will tire after a certain number of digs. The game is over when you find the treasure or if your animal becomes too fatigued to dig anymore.

Chocobo Status

Several new chocobo statuses will be added in the next version update. Also, any status condition affecting your chocobo will be cured when it achieves its next state of growth.

New Statuses
Two new beneficial statuses being added are "bursting with vitality" and "sparkling with intelligence." During these times, not only will training programs yield better results, but your chocobo will also be more receptive to physical and mental stimulation.

Chocobos in Love
Previously, a chocobo being in love would only negatively affect the success rate of its training. However, with the next version update, this certain status will now sometimes benefit the chocobo.

Other Changes and Adjustments

Taking your Chocobo for a Walk
When you take your chocobo for a walk, it may now find items for you.

New Abilities
When obtained through a certain quest, the new ability known as "treasure finder" will improve your chocobo's chances of locating hidden coffers when playing the new Chocobo Hot and Cold Game.

December FFXI Update

Job Adjustments

Today's Topics will discuss the upcoming job adjustments planned for paladins, dark knights, blue mages, corsairs, and puppetmasters.

Paladin Adjustments

With high defensive capabilities and enmity generation in mind, we will be adjusting the effect of the paladin job abilities Sentinel and Rampart.

Sentinel
The effect of Sentinel will be changed from an increase in defense to straight damage mitigation. Also, all actions taken while Sentinel is in effect will generate additional enmity, allowing the paladin to more easily gain and maintain an enemy's attention.

Rampart
In addition to the defense bonus granted to party members within the area of effect, Rampart will now also provide a "Magic Shield" that will absorb a certain amount of magic damage in the same manner as the spell "Stoneskin."

Shield Mastery
In addition to granting a TP bonus, the Shield Mastery job trait will also prevent interruption to spell casting when an enemy's attack is blocked with a shield.

Dark Knight Adjustments

The casting time for Absorb spells will be reduced from 4 seconds to 2 seconds to increase their utility in battle.

Blue Mage Adjustments

Changes will include more monsters available from which to learn blue magic, as well as additional spells, and adjustments to recast times.

New Blue Magic
In addition to spells attainable from the newly introduced soulflayers and the Poroggo, there will be new spells made available for mid-level players that have healing and dispelling effects.

Existing Blue Magic
The recast time for enfeebling blue magic spells such as "Chaotic Eye" and "Frightful Roar" will be reduced.

Corsair Adjustments

Corsair adjustments in the upcoming version update will mainly focus on the Quick Draw ability. Also, with the addition of the Rapid Shot job trait, ranged attacks will become a more viable combat tool for the Corsair.

Quick Draw Accuracy
A corsair's AGI will now affect the accuracy of Quick Draw.

- Light Shot: Sleep
- Dark Shot: Dispel

*The Quick Draw additional effect of increasing the potency of enfeebling effects will remain unchanged.

Puppetmaster Adjustments

Several new automaton weapon skills will be introduced. High-level automatons will have new weapon skills available for use in various situations.

- Melee Type
Inflicts melee damage on a target and drains an amount of HP in proportion to the damage dealt.
- Ranged Type
Inflicts ranged damage on a target and occasionally has the additional effect of Stun.
- Magic Type/Standard Type
Inflicts melee damage on a target and occasionally has the additional effect of greatly reducing evasion for a brief period of time.

* * *

A new text command [/ignorepet] will also be introduced that will allow you to ignore the pets of others, including automatons, avatars, and charmed monsters.
The text command can be used in the following way:

/ignorepet: Displays current status when no subcommand is specified
/ignorepet on: Ignore pet targets
/ignorepet off: Allow pet targets

*While using [/ignorepet on], you will be unable to target others' pets.
*You will always be able to target monsters' pets, player character's pets in PvP, and Fellows regardless of the ignorepet command.

Final Fantasy XI on the PS3
Posted by: Cuer - Sun Nov 12th, 2006 04:17 pm EST
Update:
Info from an IGN report on the third PS3 patch, that now provides the ability for the PS3 hard drive to function as a PS2 hard drive, allowing games like FFXI to work.
Sony Computer Entertainment today released a small update for the PlayStation 3 that allows PlayStation 2 games to store cache data on the hard disc drive, like Final Fantasy XI or the SOCOM map pack. Rather than a regular system update that would up your firmware version number, the update is a standalone package available on the PlayStation Store.

The update runs nearly 7MB in size and basically looks to create a virtual space for PS2 hard drive support. PS2 games that can use, or in the case of Final Fantasy XI, require the hard drive will simply prompt you to save the data as per normal. On the PlayStation 3, this data chunk is listed under the Game Data Utility like any other cache information would be, though it's all stored in a single piece of data.

So for those of you who want to try out FFXI on the PlayStation 3, now's your chance.

The recently released PS3 in Japan can run many PS2 games. At this time, Final Fantasy XI cannot run on it; no PS2 games that utilize the hard drive can currently run on the PS3. This should be fixed in a future PS3 software patch. Details from an IGN report:

Games that use the hard disk will currently not run. The problem is that the built-in PS3 hard disk cannot currently be used as a PS2 hard disk. We haven't tried it out ourselves, but this means games like Final Fantasy XI and Nobunaga's Ambition Online won't work.

For now at least. The good news is that Sony plans on making hard disk based PS2 games compatible in a future system software update. The list of titles that will work once this magic system update is carried is basically just Nobunaga's Ambition Online, Final Fantasy XI and the Play Online viewer, and Front Mission Online in all their variations, including expansions.

Further information will be posted as it is available...
