Mining in FFXI is a way to obtain ore and other items that are
primarily used by the Smithing and Goldsmithing guilds. Mining is
accomplished by going to one of the zones listed below, and finding one
of the Mining Points that occur throughout the zone. When a mining
point is targetted, a Pickaxe can be used to try
to dig up an item. Once a mining point is used up, it disappears, and
another one
appears somewhere else in the zone. In this way the mining points
change randomly in availability throughout the zone. Sometimes the
mining point will give nothing, and often a pickaxe will break while
trying to mine. A miner can dig at a mining point multiple times
without obtaining any items; the more times a specific point is dug at
before it disappears, the greater the chance that the pickaxe used will
break.
There are two sets of equipment that Improve Mining,
which are worn on three body slots.
Wearing these items does not change the type of items that are dug up,
but it does lower the chances of a pickaxe breaking when a miner uses
it, which makes mining much more profitable. The higher level armor
that improves mining has not been shown to improve mining any more than
the lower level equipment, although it does provide greater defense. Note that staying and mining for an extended period in a single zone will tend to decrease the results of logging certain items. Otherwise, the items that are dug up with mining are not known to be based in any way on the weather, moon phase, or anything else; the results seem rather random. The colored stones that can be dug up in some zones are dependant on the game day of the week, however; when those are mined, the color of the stone is based on the game day of the week.
The items are listed below that can potentially be obtained with mining
in FFXI. All items are listed by the zone that they are available from,
and by estimated rarity.
