Food Overview
Food items in Final Fantasy XI boost the stats and abilities of characters, and are chosen to provide bonuses that make a job more powerful. Food effects can raise basic stats such as Vitality or Intelligence, increase Defense or Attack, help regenerate Hit Points or Magic Points, or provide many other bonuses. A character that uses food will tend to have an advantage over one that doesn't. Unlike most items in Final Fantasy XI, food can be used by a character of any level. Certain meals are the most effective at different jobs and levels, which will be explained by this guide. Juice items are a handy type of food that can give MP and HP regeneration over time, and are also detailed below.
If they can afford the gil, most players use basic food as they level up solo the first levels of a job. It is considered useful for a character to utilize food that is most helpful to their job as they start to group by levels 10-15. From level 20 on, a character in experience parties should always have food appropriate for their job, to be as useful as possible to their party.
Almost all food items are crafted by the
Cooking Guild
, and can be purchased in the Auction House from other players. There are some cooking ingredients that give food effects as well, plus two special types of meat.
Raw meat
can only be eaten by Galka characters, while
raw fish
can only be eaten by Mithra characters. Raw cooking materials are generally not worth eating themselves, as even the most basic crafted food is much more powerful.
Food Effect Types
There are three possible types of effects gained by using food in FFXI:
A standard food effect.
This type of effect is provided by the majority of the items in FFXI. A standard food effect has a fixed duration, as listed in the chart below. Food effects can also be removed with the medicine item
Antacid
, or by trading a
Gysahl Green
to the Tarutaru NPC
Parike-Poranke
. The many different types of effects provided by standard food are outlined in the guide below.
A
Refresh
effect that restores Magic Points (MP).
The
items that provide this effect
are mainly juice drinks. The effect from these is rather short, lasting between 1-5 minutes. These juice items are primarily used in specific, tough fights such as BCNMs, although veteran casters also often keep some in their inventory for emergency use during experience parties. The amount of MP refreshed varies between the juices, with the juices that are harder to craft providing a more powerful refresh than the low crafting skill level ones. This effect is the same as the Red Mage spell Refresh; the spell and the juice will over-ride each other, and will not stack. The MP refresh effect does stack with Bard Ballad songs. These juices are listed in the
Regen and Refresh Juice
section.
A
Regen
effect that restores Hit Points (HP).
The
items that provide this effect
are drinks, primarily the au Lait items. These drinks are also mainly used in BCNM fights, or to get out of a tight situation. The HP regen effect last between 2-10 minutes, depending on the drink. Like the Refresh drinks, the amount regenerated varies between the drinks. The HP regeneration effect is the same as the Regen spell; the spell and juice effects will over-ride each other, and will not stack. The HP regeneration effect does stack with Bard Paeon songs. These juices are also listed in the
Regen and Refresh Juice
section.
A character can have one of each of these types of effects active at once. To gain these effects from food usually requires eating three different foods. There are two drinks that provide both Refresh and Regen effects, however:
Amrita
, which is created through
Abjuration
; and
Vampire Juice
.
It is common to use three food items to gain all three effects during specific, tough fights. A Paladin in a
BCNM
fight might use these three foods, for example: a Defense food such as a
Fish Mithkabob
for defensive boosts; a Regen drink such as a
Pear au Lait
to gain a Regen effect; a Refresh drink such as a
Melon Juice
to gain a Refresh effect.
Food Duration
All food creates effects that last for a specific duration. The duration of the food effect is determined by the quality of the crafted food, and how many items fit in a stack for that food, if any. When a food effect wears off, all bonuses provided from the food are immediately removed. The durations for food can be:
3 Minutes -
Snack Food items give effects with a 3 minute duration, for the Normal Quality crafted versions. These Snack Foods all stack to 99.
5 Minutes -
The High Quality version of Snack Food which stacks to 99 have effects that last for 5 minutes. All effects from raw food are also 5 minutes in length, including those from raw fish, meat, and vegetables.
30 Minutes -
Normal Quality crafted food that stacks to 12 have effects that last for 30 minutes. The majority of the food in the game is of this type.
60 Minutes -
High Quality crafted food that stacks to 12 have effects that last for 60 minutes.
3 Hours -
All non-stackable crafted Normal Quality food have effects that last for 180 minutes, or 3 hours.
4 Hours -
All non-stackable crafted High Quality food have effects that last for 240 minutes, or 4 hours.
A standard approach to using food in a pickup experience party is to keep a stack of 30 minute food to use when the party first starts. If you wish to use a more powerful non-stackable food that lasts for 3 or 4 hours, switch to that after the 30 minute food wears off, if the party looks like it will be going for many more hours.
Limits on Food Effects
In December 2004, the food effects in Final Fantasy XI were overhauled dramatically. The changes are detailed in the
Food Effects Revamp
. The most important change to make note of is the way that certain statuses increased by food are now capped. When a food effect increases the following by a
percentage
, it is capped:
Attack
Ranged Attack
Defense
Accuracy
Ranged Accuracy
HP
MP
For example, if a character can uses a food that increases Attack by a percentage, like a
Meat Mithkabob
, the amount of Attack increased by that percentage will only go so high, and then it stops. The way these food effect caps work is that there is a percentage increase to the status, a capped amount that the status increase will not go beyond, and a calculated level at which the percentage increase stops.
An example of these caps can be seen by looking at
Boiled Crayfish
, which only has one effect:
Defense +30% (Cap: 25@83 Base Defense)
This food boosts the Defense of whoever uses it; the three numbers listed with the Defense provide information about that effect.
Defense +30%
signifies that the Defense of the character is increased by 30% when the food is eaten.
Cap: 25
means that the food will raise Defense by a
maximum
of 25 points. Defense will be raised by 30% until it reaches the cap of 25; it will never go up more than 25 from this food effect.
@83 Base Defense
is a simple calculation to show that if a character has 83 or more base Defense (including armor and buffs such as Protect) before eating the food, they will hit that limit of 25 Defense from the food.
For example, imagine a low level Paladin with 50 base Defense who wants to use food that will help him tank. This would be great food for him to eat; it would boost his Defense by 30%, or 15. Once he gets more levels and has a base Defense much above 83, however, he'll want to eat food with a higher Defense cap. Since this food will never provide more than 25 points of Defense, someone with a higher base Defense could get more Defense added if they used a different food with a higher cap.
This simple graph from
The Wondrous World of Cooking
Vana'diel Tribune article displays the effect limits for a handful of
Melee Attack Foods
. As can be seen, the
Grilled Hare
starts off increasing the Attack the most for a new character who has very low base Attack. That food stops giving any extra benefits for characters who have 50 or greater base Attack, so characters with greater base Attack will want to use a food with a higher limit, such as
Roast Mutton
. This type of setup is used on all food effects that increase a status by a percentage amount. With this system players are encouraged to use different food as their characters level up, instead of eating the same item all of the time. The charts below list the most efficient food to use for
Melee Attack Foods
,
Melee Defense Foods
, and
Ranged Attack Foods
. There are also a handful of powerful
MP Foods
that provide percentage based MP boosts. It is worth checking to see which food would prove most useful in these catagories to your character before hitting the Auction House.
Note that some of the percentage effects on the food items in the database do not have caps listed for them right now; that's because they haven't been discovered yet. Over time, all the percentage based food effects will have those caps listed.
Food Groups & Recommendations
Melee Attack Foods
The food listed below is recommended to raise the Attack status. The most efficient food to use at any given time can be determined by looking at the base Attack of the character, with all gear equipped, and then choosing accordingly. Note that the recommendations in this list are entirely based on pushing Attack to the maximum with the lowest crafting skill food; there are often other variables to take into account when deciding which food to use.

Ranged Attack Foods
The food listed here helps Rangers, offensive Ninjas, and other jobs that do damage regularly with ranged attacks. It is difficult to know the exact numbers of food effects involving Ranged Attack or Ranged Accuracy, given the lack of information in the game regarding those statuses; the numbers listed for those stats are at best rough estimates. This list focuses on foods that improve Ranged Attack; the main foods that boost Ranged Accuracy are the sushi found in the
Accuracy Foods
section.

Accuracy Foods
The foods listed below help with Accuracy; some only raise melee Accuracy, while others also boost Ranged Accuracy. The more powerful sushi foods are often used by level 60+ characters in physical damage jobs, when it becomes difficult to reliably land hits on mobs in experience parties. Most melee damage jobs at those levels either use Sushi and wear equipment that improves Attack, or use the Melee Attack foods while wearing a large amount of equipment that raises Accuracy. The sushi foods listed below raise accuracy by a percentage, providing little use for characters under level 40; at those levels, a character will not have enough basic Accuracy to make it worth raising by a percentage.

MP Foods
The foods listed here all raise MP to one degree or another. The fruit pies (and their more powerful HQ versions) are common foods for any caster job. The mushroom MP food is useful for jobs that Cure, since it boosts Mind instead of Intelligence. The fourth row displays powerful food items that can raise MP by 75+, while the last row lists a handful of other useful MP foods.

HP Foods
Most foods that raise HP are not worth using. Having higher maximum HP rarely provides a large enough bonus to make those foods superior to foods which raise statuses such as Defense or Attack. The foods listed below do have use in certain situations. The first two foods are HQ results of low level Cooking recipes, and provide a combination of boosts helpful to new jobs leveling up. The
Turtle Soup
can be useful for high end fights where melee jobs repeatedly use the Sword weaponskill
Spirits Within
, which does damage based on the current HP of the character.

Rice Ball Foods
Rice balls are a unique type of food in FFXI in the way that their effects are provided. All rice balls give a fixed amount of their effects when used, not percentage boosts. They also have extra effects that are given if an item is worn with the
Enhances Effects of Rice Balls
effect on it, when the rice ball is eaten. The equipment that enhances rice balls is the Samurai Artifact hand armor
Myochin Kote
, or the level 71 head item
Roshi Jinpachi
. The extra effects will be given if either of these items is worn when a rice ball is eaten. If both pieces of equipment are used when a rice ball is eaten, the strength of the extra effects is
doubled
. A high level Samurai equipped with both of these pieces of armor can get great use out of rice balls in both an offensive and defensive fashion. The rice ball food items are listed below, along with their possible extra effects.

Food Used By Each Job
The following is an overview of the regular food items used by each job. Note that this covers the basics of the food that most people find useful and relatively inexpensive to use in experience groups; there are always other options available. The food listed here is mainly Normal Quality crafted food, but using the High Quality version will give extra bonuses.
Newbie Food -
When leveling up a new job, the first 5-8 levels generally go the fastest by using a standard melee approach, augmented by whatever other abilities the job offers. Even caster jobs can usually kill very low level mobs at a faster rate with melee attacks than by casting, making the food used a bit different than what they use in later levels. A handful of the
HP Foods
are useful at low levels, or any food that provides
HP Healing Regen
. There are
Snack Foods
that are also very powerful in that regard. The lowest
Melee Attack Foods
can also help out when leveling up very low level jobs, by providing higher damage per hit in melee combat. As a character reaches level 5-8, depending on the job, it will become harder for caster jobs to act as a melee. At that point it is usually a good idea to switch to a standard type of food for the job, as listed below.
Bard -
Most Bards have a White Mage subjob, which is extremely useful but only provides a small amount of MP to work with.
MP Foods
can help in this regard, especially many of the pies; even a standard Apple Pie gives a substantial bonus in MP to a Brd/Whm. There aren't many foods that raise both Charisma, the Bard's most important stat, as well as MP.
Chamomile Tea
provides small boosts in those stats. There are a handful of other more expensive options that provide bonuses in Charisma and other statuses, including
Tavnazian Salad
,
Tuna Sushi
, and
Flint Caviar
. After level 65, many Bards have the
Opo-opo Crown
. With this equipped, a
Pamama
is the standard food.
Black Mage -
There are many choices for Black Mages from the
MP Foods
, providing the Intelligence and MP that are mainstay statuses for the job. Pies are often used until the Black Mage's MP pool becomes large enough to utilize the percentage based MP foods.
Beastmaster -
Beastmasters have to do a bit of everything, and the types of food they utilize are accordingly varied.
MP Pies and Mushroom Foods
are useful for the standard Bst/Whm setup, to help boost the meager MP pool. Both
Melee Attack Foods
and
Melee Defense Foods
can be used, since Beastmasters do melee damage and can end up tanking part of the time. When the focus is Charisma to enhance their Charm ability, Beastmasters can utilize some of the same food as Bards:
Chamomile Tea
,
Tavnazian Salad
,
Tuna Sushi
, and
Flint Caviar
.
Melee Attack - Dark Knight, Dragoon, Monk, Samurai, Thief, Warrior -
These are the quintessential melee damaging jobs, and in that role they typically use
Melee Attack Foods
. Sometimes it becomes more useful to have food that raises accuracy instead, especially above level 60, when it is very difficult to keep accuracy high. The various
Accuracy Foods
can help immensely in that regard. Also at higher levels, there are options such as
Rice Ball Foods
, which provide extra boosts for a Samurai wearing a
Myochin Kote
, or any job using a
Roshi Jinpachi
.
Ranged Attack - Ranger, Ninja -
For Rangers, and the occasional Ninja who is in an attack mode, there are specific foods that help raise both melee and ranged attacks. The
Ranged Attack Foods
are primarily used by these jobs; there are a number of
Accuracy Foods
that help raise Ranged Accuracy as well.
Melee Defense - Ninja, Paladin, Warrior -
For Paladins, and the Ninja and Warriors who join them in tanking,
Melee Defense Foods
are the way to go. Ninjas who don't need the defensive boosts of that food will sometimes use standard
Melee Attack Foods
instead, or foods that help raise their
Evasion
even further. There are a handful of
Accuracy Foods
that are defensive in nature, such as the
Jack-o'-Lantern
,
Urchin Sushi
and
Dorado Sushi
.
Red Mage -
Red Mages can be effective in many ways, but the standard
MP Foods
are used by them in most experience groups. The wide variety of bonuses from
Sweet Rice Cake
make it a common choice for Red Mages in standard experience groups. For a lower level melee or soloing Red Mage, the
Rice Dumpling
likewise provides a wide array of boosts. Red Mages who want to dramatically boost their Mind can make use of the
Goblin Mushpot
. The powerful bonuses found in the
Brain Stew
occasionally make it an appealing choice, as well.
Summoner -
There are many
MP Foods
that are useful for Summoners. The pies and large effect MP foods provide a boost to expand their already massive MP pool. When functioning as more of a White Mage with summons, the Mushroom MP Food is handy.
White Mage -
The
MP Foods
have a large number of foods that can help out White Mages. Mushroom MP Food is specifically designed to help with the stats they need the most; those that provide both an increase to Mind and reduction in Enmity are quite useful.
