Doll Festival Extraordinaire!
Posted by: Cuer - Fri Feb 16th, 2007 11:08 am EST
From the
Official FFXI Site
(February 23):
The Doll Festival
The Doll Festival is a solemn Far Eastern celebration in which displays of dolls and sweets are used to congratulate young girls on their growth.
The festival is supposed to be for young girls only, but the M.H.M.U. (Mog House Management Union) has been working with Windurst's Rhinostery to develop a special variety of rice cake that turns anyone who eats one into a little girl, ultimately allowing boys and girls of all sizes to participate in the festivities!
To make sure that everyone receives a piece of the magical cake, moogles down at the MHMU have been stuffing envelopes full of the tasty treats and sending them to every single Mog House in Vana'diel.
*Rice cakes should start arriving in Mog House delivery boxes sometime on or around February 23. Not everyone's will arrive at the same time.
*Only characters starting their adventures before 2/18/2007 will receive a cake.
*If you return your cake to the MHMU, you will not be able to receive another one.
Doll Festival Decorations
The following areas will be decked with Doll Festival decor from midnight on February 23, 2007 (PST) to midnight, March 4:
- Southern San d'Oria
- Northern San d'Oria
- Bastok Mines
- Bastok Markets
- Windurst Waters
- Windurst Woods

(February 16):
Doll Festival Extraordinaire!
Has it been a year already? It seems like only yesterday when adventurers were last dining on gourmet rice cakes and posing for glamour shots all across the cities of Vana'diel. That's right, the Doll Festival is here again, and the moogles down at the MHMU headquarters have been burning the midnight oil preparing a fresh new batch of sweet rice goodness for all the good little boys and girls. And for those of you who need a little more stimulation than gluten and natural coloring has to offer, we are also planning a doll festival/spring-themed fan art contest, to be held right here within the Topics.
*Poppin' fresh rice cakes are scheduled to arrive in the delivery boxes of every adventurer on Monday, February 19, 2007.
*Entries for the fan art contest will be accepted starting Friday, February 23. For information on how to participate, be sure to check the Topics on that day.

PlayOnline Development News: February-March 2007
Posted by: Cuer - Fri Feb 09th, 2007 08:13 pm EST
From the
Official FFXI Site
(March 5):
Battle System Adjustments
In the upcoming version update, we plan to introduce two new dark knight spells, as well as implement changes to Signet that will improve party play for smaller groups.
Signet Bonuses
The adjustments made to improve player accuracy and attack versus monsters of a higher level, as well as the measures implemented to benefit full parties and prevent unfair pulling practices, have made it difficult for smaller groups to cooperate efficiently against weaker opponents.
In order to address this issue, the following bonuses will be added to the Signet effect in the upcoming version update:
- Increased Healing HP
- No TP loss while resting
- Bonus experience earned in smaller parties
- Increased defense and evasion against attacks from your auto-attack target
- Increased Healing HP
The initial value for Healing HP (based on the character's level), as well as the incremental jumps in Healing HP (based on the character's maximum HP), will be increased.
This change will improve Healing HP in a similar fashion to the bonus granted to Healing MP by the Clear Mind job trait.
- No TP loss while resting
While this bonus is in effect, TP will not be lost while resting.
This will allow players to rest fully for their next battle while still maintaining the store of TP they had built from their previous opponent.
- Bonus experience in small groups
The amount of experience earned while in smaller parties will be increased.
This bonus will be applied on the following scale:
*The experience earned for defeating special monsters will remain unaffected.
- Increased defense and evasion against attacks from your auto-attack target
Players will gain a bonus to their defense and evasion against their auto-attack target.
This bonus only applies to attacks from an opponent who you are auto-attacking with a drawn weapon. There is no effect against attacks from other sources, including monsters that unexpectedly join the fray.
*This bonus will only apply to monsters that check as "even match" or weaker to the player.
The bonuses described above will only take effect when a player has received Signet, and is within the usual Signet-specific areas. These bonuses do not apply during Ballista, or other PvP events.
New Dark Knight Spells
The following dark knight spells will be introduced in the upcoming version update.
- Drain II
(Lv.62 Recast Time: 3 minutes Duration: 1 minute)
Steals an enemy's HP, potentially increasing maximum HP. Ineffective against undead.
HP drained that exceeds the amount necessary to fully heal the dark knight will temporarily boost maximum HP. As well as healing the dark knight, this spell should prove useful in providing extra HP for abilities such as Souleater.
- Dread Spikes
(Lv.71 Recast Time: 3 minutes Duration: 1 minute)
Covers you with magical darkness spikes. Steals HP from enemies that hit you. Ineffective against undead.
While Dread Spikes is in effect, the dark knight will drain an amount of HP from an enemy corresponding to the amount of damage inflicted by each of the enemy's attacks. Dread Spikes will wear off after the dark knight has absorbed an amount of HP equal to a certain percentage of his maximum HP, regardless of the remaining duration.
*The effect of Dread Spikes will be adjusted during PvP.
The HP absorbed by the reactive effect of Dread Spikes will not generate enmity for the dark knight. *The dark knight will still be KO'd if a single attack inflicts an amount of damage that exceeds his remaining HP.
Official PlayOnline Announcement
From the
Official FFXI Site
(March 1):
New Assault Area
In the upcoming version update, we will be introducing the Nyzul Isle Assault area. The Nyzul Isle Assault area will challenge players with a dungeon that has a randomly generated layout--every floor will contain new opponents to battle, as well as new objectives to complete!
Development Concept
In the spirit of the Salvage area implemented in the December version update, we will be introducing more small-group content in the form of a randomly generated Assault area. In order to reach the highest level of this new Assault area, players will have to overcome various mechanisms and monsters, and contend with all manner of astonishing challenges. The development team is hard at work creating new content that will provide fresh, ever-changing enjoyment.
Participation
Players can sign up for the new Assault area missions at the Commissions Agency in Aht Urhgan Whitegate. Participation is restricted to the usual 3 to 6 members; however, players cannot choose to impose a level restriction for Nyzul Isle Assault missions. There are no requirements for participating in Nyzul Isle Assault missions other than being a registered mercenary.
Assault Mission Progression
The Nyzul Isle Assault area will be randomly generated as a series of "floors" every time you begin a mission. The basic progression consists of working towards the highest level of the area by completing the objective of each floor within the time limit. Objectives include goals such as the defeat of all monsters on a floor, the elimination of specific creatures, as well as various other challenges. We estimate that approximately 5 floors will be completed during a single attempt.
Recording Progress
When using the Rune of Transfer to exit the Nyzul Isle Assault area, it is possible to record the data of the highest floor you have reached (in blocks of 5 floors). Once this data has been recorded, you will be able to start again from this point, even if you have been ejected from the area due to, for example, an expired time limit.
Starting from a recorded floor will require the use of "tokens" obtained within the Nyzul Isle Assault area. The further you progress, the more tokens you will need to begin the next block of floors. Players will require a substantial number of tokens in order to reach the highest floor of Nyzul Isle.
*All participants will obtain tokens from a mission; however, only the person who operates the Rune of Transfer on the starting floor will receive the recorded data.
Rewards
Due to the special nature of Nyzul Isle, players will not receive Assault Points for missions completed in this area. However, you will have the chance to obtain items from the creatures that appear on each floor. Monsters from every corner of Vana'diel, including many powerful and ordinarily elusive Notorious Monsters, stalk the floors of Nyzul Isle. Triumph over these opponents and you may earn some truly rare and wonderful treasures!

(February 20):
Besieged Adjustments
In the upcoming version update, we plan to make further adjustments to Besieged, including a level increase to the beastman armies, the addition of new temporary items, and new combat abilities for the Serpent Generals.
Beastman Army Level Increase
In addition to the maximum value for enemy forces being increased to 170, level 7 units comprised of new monster types will be introduced for each beastman army. Be sure to participate in Besieged to discover what deadly new opponents threaten the Imperial capital!
New Temporary Items
To coincide with the threat of powerful new enemies, the variety of temporary items distributed at the beginning of every Besieged will also be expanded. These new items will have an offensive focus, and their availability will depend on which NPCs have been taken captive and the overall condition of the Imperial defense.
Serpent General Abilities
The Serpent Generals will each receive unique new combat abilities to use during Besieged. Join the fight against the beastmen alongside these inspiring leaders!

Upcoming Version Update Details
In the upcoming version update, we plan on introducing the next segment of the Treasures of Aht Urhgan missions, as well as a number of new features and improvements that will make your life in Vana'diel more enjoyable than ever before!
New Missions
In the next version update, we will be continuing the Treasures of Aht Urhgan missions where they left off in the October update. The next installment will include the appearance of new monsters, the four Mamool Ja overlords, the mysterious Dark Rider, and many other surprises you won't want to miss!
Merit Points
A new graphic effect will be added that will let surrounding players know when you have gained a merit point. Also, you will be able to switch between experience point mode and limit point mode in any area, not just your Mog House.
*You will not be able to switch modes while under a level restriction (such as in a battlefield or during an Assault mission), or when participating in Besieged.
*Allocation of merit points will still only be possible within your Mog House.
Item Storage and Card Cases
The NPC who stores certain equipment sets will begin accepting relic-level armor in the upcoming version update. Also, the arrow-bundling NPC has expanded her wares to include cases that allow you to carry 99 corsair cards as one item.
Map Marking
The next update will see the appearance of an NPC that will mark your magical maps to make it easier to find those special NPCs, such as the minstrel of melodies, and the item storage NPCs.

PlayOnline: Valentione Wishes & Bubble Chocolate Dreams
Posted by: Cuer - Fri Jan 26th, 2007 07:34 pm EST
Valentione Wishes & Bubble Chocolate Dreams
It's here again! It's here again! The day we've all been waiting for is finally here...again, kupo! What day is that, you ask? Why, Valentione's Day, of course! The moogles down at the MHMU have been working overtime to make this year's festivities at least as entrancing, if not more, than last year's, kupo! We have a heartwarming event all prepared to bring together desperate singles in an explosion of hot-pink affection, but it seems a lot of them are inflicted with a case of cold feet. I guess we're going to need your help on this one, adventurers!
*Valentione's Day festivities are scheduled for February 1 to February 15.
Valentione's Day
A long time ago, in a kingdom not so far away (actually, it was San d'Oria), a peasant squire named Valentione defied centuries of feudal law by sending a special gift to a young noble. This ultimate expression of love over tradition is said to be the origin of the festival we celebrate today.
Ah, love is in the air, and the Mog House Management Union (MHMU) wants to help all those stray hearts find their better halves, kupo! Valentione's Day is a chance for young lovers to express their true feelings by giving that "special someone" a chunk of chocolate sweeter than the words "I love you." We've planned a bittersweet event to bring lonely Vana'dielian couples together, but it looks like most of the adventurers that signed up aren't as comfortable talking with those of the opposite sex once they've put away their halberds and hauberks. That's why we need your help to be Cupid! Don't worry--we'll have something tasty ready for all those who help us out, kupo!
When!?
The Valentione excitement begins at 16:00 (PST) on Thursday, February 1 and continues until 0:00 (PST) on Thursday, February 15 (Earth time).
Where!?
Valentione moogles will be dancing and prancing in locations all across Vana'diel. Find one and listen closely to what he has to say. Your furry friends hold the keys to Valentione's Day festivities, and you wouldn't want to miss out on all the fun and games, would you!? Here's a list of where they'll be twirling:
- Southern San d'Oria (J-9)
- Northern San d'Oria (D-8)
- Bastok Mines (I-9)
- Bastok Markets (G-8)
- Windurst Waters (F-5)
- Windurst Woods (K-10)
Valentione Memories
Are you still pondering over how you should spend your Valentione's Day? What should you prepare? Where should you go? Should you pop the big question? If you just can't decide, then why not take a lesson from these free-spirited adventurers and their journeys down the highway of love?
My boyfriend and I were closer than leeches on a goobue's ankle after a wade through the Caedarva Mire...until we had that spat over whose Brenner was more flammen. After that we didn't speak for moons, and I was certain the end was upon us. But when I opened my delivery box on Valentione's Day and saw a Castor's Ring with my darling's name carved on the inside, I knew it wouldn't be long before he was back in my arms. I still wear that ring whenever we go on Assault missions. Its +10 love is better than any increase in intelligence or mind.
Hume F / Ranger
All cooks love Valentione's! Except for me, of course. I try and I try to make heart chocolates for all my friends and flames, but every year I end up with a Mog House bursting with molding bubble chocolate. But on the upside, there's always some cheap chump out there weary to part with the extra gil to unlock his sweetie's heart, and so those bloody bubbles usually help me break even.
Tarutaru F / Paladin
I fell hard for this one fine lass after spending a great deal of time with her on various adventures. My plan was to tell her how I felt last Valentione's Day. However, when that fateful event rolled around, I couldn't muster up the courage to reveal the feelings pent up in my heart. After that, we slowly lost contact with each other until our friendship had faded into the mists of eternity. If I had only taken that extra step, I wouldn't be a lone traveler on a road to nowhere...
Galka / Warrior
One day on our way back from clobbering colibris in Wajoam, another Mithra in my party started handing out different colored flowers to everyone. When we asked her why, she cheerfully replied, "It's Valentione's Day, sillies! You didn't forget, did you?"
Well, actually, we all had forgotten, but we appreciated the gesture... Well, almost all of us. Supposedly the color of each flower had some sort of meaning--yellow for friendship, red for love, etc. But just what was she trying to say when she handed me that dried marjoram?

Site Updates - January 6, 2007

An exciting addition is now live on the site:
user created comments
! We've put together a system to allow comments on just about every aspect of the site: whether it's a new
item
, a ferocious
NM
, an
NPC
,
ENM
,
zone
,
BCNM
,
quest
or other area -- just about every section of the site now has comments at the bottom of the page. These are designed to let you to provide extra information that may be missing, or correct inaccurate data, throughout the site. We're looking for hard, cold facts; broad discussions are still best done on the
discussion forums
.
You can also rate each comment up or rated down once, to reflect the value of the information contained; even if you don't have anything to say, feel free to rate any comments that you see. For now, all comments default to a zero rating, and the default view is the same; that may change down the road.
This is the testing phase for the comments; we'll see how they work, and adjust the system accordingly, as needed. All the
discussion board rules
apply to comments as well; take a moment to read those if you haven't, to stay within the guidelines. Beyond that, a few pointers to keep in mind:
Stay on Point
: Only post comments about the actual information on that page - if you have information about a stand-alone NM, post it on that monster's page, nowhere else. Comments about a specific item go on that item's page, details regarding a quest go on that quest's page, etc.
No Tags
: For now, we don't have any formatting or linking tags in the comments, to discourage spam. We're looking into ways to safely add some of those down the road.
Deprecated Comments
: We will be regularly scanning all new comments, to see any that have information that needs to be changed. If we update something such as an item from the comment, we'll reply to the comment, and then deprecate it, so it doesn't show up by default. That way, the comments for each item/mob/NPC/etc. only refer to current information. You can look at the deprecated comments for any entity, however, if you wish to double-check information that other users have posted.
Reporting a Comment
: If you disagree with the information contained in a comment, be sure to reply and detail why, and/or rate it down. If the comment is spam, or any other type of post that is listed as
not permitted
or
strictly prohibited
in the
discussion board rules
, you can report it directly to us. Just select the orange warning icon, and the site administrators will be notified regarding the post.
Comment Administration
: We will delete comments that are prohibited, as mentioned above; users who regularly break those rules may have their ability to leave any comments suspended, or revoked. If a comment has something small that runs against the rules, such as foul language, we may edit it instead; comments that are edited will be noted as such.
Get Signed Up!
: All users must have a somepage.com account, to post comments or submit ratings to comments. You can go to
ffxi.somepage.com/users/
to sign in, or register if you don't have an account yet, using our newly upgraded registration system. Keep in mind that you will also need to have Javascript enabled in your web browser, to use the comments section; it is turned on by default in all standard browsers.
If you run into any problems, or have suggestions regarding the new comments system, feel free to post them in the
forum topic
for this news item. Enjoy, and we'll be watching how it all works!

PlayOnline: The New Year is Upon Us!
Posted by: Cuer - Mon Jan 01st, 2007 11:57 am EST
Happy New Year!
Have you heard the news, adventurers?
Herds of a certain type of beast have been seen traipsing across every area of Vana'diel.
Where have they come from, and what do they want?
*This event is scheduled to begin Sunday, December 31, and end on Monday, January 15, 0:00 (PST).
Season's Greetings and a Happy New Year!
The world has seen many potentially catastrophic events over the past year, but thanks to the efforts of many tireless adventures, Vana'diel has survived to flourish like never before.
Her citizens extend their heartfelt gratitude!
Fortune's Menagerie
And now comes this rumor of herds of a certain beast traipsing across every area of Vana'diel.
In the words of a Far Eastern-born mercenary,
"In my land, there is a beast whose tusks are said to govern the provinces of wealth and prosperity. Perhaps some intrepid soul believed these creatures to be the ones I have described, and brought them to the Middle Lands for luck. It is strange, for they bear little resemblance..."
While spending a leisurely New Year in the comforts of their Mog House may sound appealing to some, you might find more excitement in chasing down these mystery beasts across field and valley! Who knows? Perhaps an encounter with these creatures will have some effect on your fortunes...
We wish everyone a year filled with happiness and prosperity!
Event Details
This event is scheduled to begin Sunday, December 31, and end on Monday, January 15, 0:00 (PST).
