The Easter Egg Hunt is on!

A full walkthrough for the Egg Hunt Egg-stravaganza is now available; post any comments or further details that you find in the related forum topic. Have fun, and enjoy this egg-citing event!

From the Official FFXI Site (March 31):

FFXI Easter Egg Event It's time once again for that egg-ceedingly egg-citing festival! The Egg Hunt Egg-stravaganza begins on April 6th!

From:FINAL FANTASY XI

The Egg Hunt Egg-stravaganza!

Is everyone enjoying the warm days? Even the carrion worms are wiggling out of their earthen homes to enjoy a little sun! That must mean that it's nearly time once again for the egg-citing Egg Hunt Egg-stravaganza!

The rules are simple. Just collect "initial eggs" and trade them with your friends for different "combinations" ! Each egg has a letter inscribed on it. Your goal is to mix and match these letters to spell out certain words.

Rumor has it that a Windurstian hermit designed the game to repair his relationship with the Parliament of Patriarchs, which was very stern at the time...

Well, the truth of the rumor is debatable, but the fact remains that the egg hunt, which seems to be a simple game at first, actually requires the keen insight, negotiation skills, and far-reaching personal connections that are said to be necessary for a job at the Parliament of Patriarchs.

So get together with your fellow aspiring members of parliament (or adventurers) and gather the eggs for that perfect combination!

How to Play
Start by collecting initial eggs, each inscribed with a letter.

The easiest way to do this is by speaking to one of the festival moogles in each area where the event is held, but you can only collect one egg each day using this method. If you are in a party when you speak with the moogle, you will have the opportunity to select the type of egg you want based on the initials of your party's other members.

You can collect even more initial eggs by trading other types of eggs you may have on hand to any of the moogles in the three nations. Just remember that these egg exchanges are also limited to one per day (per nation). How many initial eggs you receive varies depending on the quantities and varieties of eggs you trade, so if you are not happy with what you get once, keep trying!

Once you've collected enough eggs, start exchanging with other adventurers and try making a "combination." The most basic one is called a "First 3." When you have the three initial eggs necessary for this combo, trade them to one of the moogles and collect your prize!

After a "First 3," try building an "Initial Straight 8" or a "7 of a Kind." The more you make, the more presents you'll take home!

Don't forget that you'll have to trade in a "First 3" before you can trade in any other combos. Think of it as a sort of preliminary test!

And for those of you who are looking for a real challenge, try discovering different, more exotic combinations. The moogles are usually reluctant to give out any of their classified information, but maybe if you are persistent enough, one will let you in on a secret or two! Make it a point to talk to them as often as possible!

Please note that all "new adventurers" will be required to wait one Vana'diel day before being eligible to receive initial eggs.

FFXI Fan Festival 2006 Info
Posted by: Cuer - Sat Mar 11th, 2006 03:09 am EST
The 2006 FFXI Fan Festival is going on through Saturday, with much new information being released there about the upcoming expansion to the game, Treasures of Aht Urhgan. Three new jobs will be added with the expansion: Blue Mage, Corsair, and the newly announced Puppetmaster job! This will bring the total number of jobs in FFXI to 18, with the release of the expansion.

FFXI Puppetmaster Job

Some excellent resources of information from the Fan Festival, since it will be at least a few days until everything is updated on the official Fan Festival site:
  • The official wrap-up from the Fan Festival will be coming to the post event section on the Fan Festival site; check back there periodically for more information.
  • An indepth article covering everything from the Fan Festival is at 1up.com, with a lot of speculation about what everything means. Even better, it contains a new interview with the FFXI team, with a wide ranging Q&A.
  • Two videos from the event are up at IGN: the first is the official expansion promotion video, while the second is the brief video showed with the introduction of the Puppetmaster job. They also have a lengthy article covering the information released about the expansion.
  • A great summation of the announced additions and possible changes can be found on an ffxionline.com report.
  • More of the same information, fleshed out slightly, is in the first post of an Allakhazam thread.
Please post any further links to more information or pictures from the event, in the thread for this news. With all these announcements, the official Square-Enix information regarding the expansion should be expanding dramatically in the next week, as well.

The Doll Festival

The Doll Festival

From:FINAL FANTASY XI
Feb. 23, 2006 00:50 [PST]

The Doll Festival

Get ready once again for Vana'diel's Doll Festival!

The Doll Festival is a solemn Far Eastern celebration in which displays of dolls and sweets are used to congratulate young girls on their growth.

The festival is supposed to be for young girls only, but leave it to the moogles to find a loophole. During the last Doll Festival, the M.H.M.U. (Mog House Management Union) worked with Windurst's Rhinostery to develop a special variety of rice cake that turned anyone who ate one into a little girl!

The moogles' original plan was to help grown women recapture their childlike innocence and relive the old days for a short time. In reality, however, the moogles misunderstood the event and laid down some rather unusual rules for obtaining the cakes, transforming the solemn festival into a giant fiasco! The guards were quite upset with the entire ordeal...

That wasn't enough to get the moogles down, however. Now they are responding with firm resolve:

"We want to give rice cakes to the adventurers again, kupo! We learned a valuable lesson last time, so this time we'll make getting the cakes simpler. It'll be the most solemn, super festival you've ever seen!"

They even seem to have managed to persuade the guards to let them try again, with their rants of how the festival started out of a desire to do good...

It doesn't end there, though.

According to separate reports, the real story is quite different. It seems that the M.H.M.U. spotted a prime business opportunity with the last Doll Festival. The reports state that the moogles are planning to advertise their rice cakes by handing out small samples, and then make a fortune selling the rest by dubious means. This seems to imply that poor management of M.H.M.U. finances has led to desperate measures, but the actual facts are enveloped in mystery.

Will the moogles' plans live up to expectations, or are they preparing a recipe for disaster?

Be sure to join in the celebrations and find out!

[Event Details]

This event is scheduled to commence on February 28, 2006 at 16:00, and will last until March 14, 2006 at 0:00 (PST).

Official PlayOnline Announcement

From the Official FFXI Site (March 29):

The Kokba Hostel The Kokba Hostel

In the upcoming version update, we will introduce the “Kokba Hostel,” a private room that players will be able to reserve for hour-long time slots.

The concept for the hostel has been developed along the lines of the Marble Bridge Eatery in Upper Jeuno--a place separate from the bustle of the city where players of the same job or race can meet their colleagues. In a similar vein, the Kokba Hostel has been designed to provide a space where adventurers can gather and relax with friends in a private setting.

Main features of the Kokba Hostel:

- The hostel can be found in a Treasures of Aht Urhgan area.
- Reservations can be made for one-hour slots (Earth time).
- Each person who enters the hostel will be required to pay a fee. This fee will be set to an affordable amount.
- Players can make reservations for up to two days in advance, but are limited to one reservation at a time. If the player who made a reservation fails to show, or no reservation has been made for the current time slot, it is possible to reserve the hostel on the spot.
- During the hostel reception period, you will be asked to set a password. Only players who input this password will be able to enter the hostel during your reservation.
- Players will be provided with a variety of temporary party items and food upon entering the hostel.

The hostel can be used for a wide range of functions such as linkshell group strategy meetings before an adventure, wedding receptions, or even a place to celebrate those Ballista victories! The choices are only limited by your imagination!

New Jobs in Treasures of Aht Urhgan

Official PlayOnline Announcement

FFXI Besieged Event

From the Official FFXI Site (March 27):

Besieged!

Owners of the FINAL FANTASY XI Treasures of Aht Urhgan expansion disc will be able to experience a whole new way of doing battle--"Besieged"!

Besieged is a form of Conquest on the new continent of Aradjiah. After creating a new town, the development team decided to utilize the opportunity to implement beastman attacks within the city walls, and thus began the idea of Besieged. We then decided that these invasions were to be a struggle over a single treasure of great power.

The Empire of Aht Urhgan and the beastmen of the western half of the Aradjiah continent are in a constant state of battle over this magnificent treasure--the "Astral Candescence."

Only you can protect the Astral Candescence from the beastman threat by fighting off the savage hordes. If the Astral Candescence should be taken, you must gather your fellow adventurers and storm the beastman strongholds in order to return the Empire's treasure.

So if you thought fighting for control over regions with your fellow adventurers was tough, just wait until you find yourself Besieged by hordes of monsters!

FFXI Assault Missions

From the Official FFXI Site (March 24):

"Assault" Unveiled!

Have you ever wanted to customize missions to suit your playing style? The FINAL FANTASY XI Treasures of Aht Urhgan expansion disc will include a new style of doing battle called "Assault," which will allow you to enjoy the Near East in your own way!

The Treasures of Aht Urhgan expansion disc will introduce an entirely new way to play FINAL FANTASY XI--“Assault” missions!

The FINAL FANTASY XI development team created the "Assault" system to provide a means of casual enjoyment for high-level players--the main target audience of the Treasures of Aht Urhgan expansion disc. Assault allows for parties of three to six members to enjoy gameplay that does not last a long period of time and requires little recruitment effort. Players can choose the location, decide whether or not to impose a level restriction, and select the type of Assault mission to fit with their objectives and party organization.

Players who often participate in Assault missions will earn "Imperial Standing" credits, which can be traded for items in the various Assault locations. In addition, players who succeed in an Assault mission have the possibility of obtaining a mysterious item. After receiving an appraisal in town, the mysterious item will then be displayed as a normal item.

Repeat success in Assault will also raise your mercenary rank, which will even further increase the number and variety of available Assault missions!

PlayOnline: Changes to Sending Gil
Posted by: Cuer - Mon Feb 20th, 2006 01:29 pm EST
From the Official FFXI Site (February 20):

Changes to Sending Gil

Limitations on sending gil have been put into effect with the February 21 version update.

-A cap of 1 million has been imposed on the amount of gil deliverable at one time.
-Gil can now be placed in only one of the eight available slots for delivery at a time.
These restrictions only apply to sending gil. No restrictions have been imposed on receiving gil.

The above measures were put in place to combat the trading of large amounts of gil for money in the real world (Real Money Trading, or RMT). Gil purchased by RMT is most often traded using the in-game delivery function, so limitations on sending gil were deemed an appropriate countermeasure.

The FINAL FANTASY XI development team considered informing players of this change in the Topics section before the version update. However, if players knew about the restrictions in advance, the market might have been flooded with RMT gil before the update, further exacerbating inflation. We decided that informing players of the changes at the same time as the version update would help keep the Vana'diel economy stable.

A tax on sending gil was among the measures considered, but the development team is still observing the effect of the RMT countermeasures implemented on February 9. Therefore, we determined that the best course of action for this update would be to simply impose a limit on the amount of gil deliverable at once.

We will continue to develop countermeasures against RMT and violations of the user agreement, and we would like to assure our players that all efforts are being made to ensure a fair playing experience.

We hope to have your continuing understanding and cooperation in creating a Vana'diel that everyone can enjoy.
