Final Fantasy XI on the PS3
Posted by: Cuer - Sun Nov 12th, 2006 04:17 pm EST
Update:
Info from an IGN report on the third PS3 patch, that now provides the ability for the PS3 hard drive to function as a PS2 hard drive, allowing games like FFXI to work.
Sony Computer Entertainment today released a small update for the PlayStation 3 that allows PlayStation 2 games to store cache data on the hard disc drive, like Final Fantasy XI or the SOCOM map pack. Rather than a regular system update that would up your firmware version number, the update is a standalone package available on the PlayStation Store.

The update runs nearly 7MB in size and basically looks to create a virtual space for PS2 hard drive support. PS2 games that can use, or in the case of Final Fantasy XI, require the hard drive will simply prompt you to save the data as per normal. On the PlayStation 3, this data chunk is listed under the Game Data Utility like any other cache information would be, though it's all stored in a single piece of data.

So for those of you who want to try out FFXI on the PlayStation 3, now's your chance.

The recently released PS3 in Japan can run many PS2 games. At this time, Final Fantasy XI cannot run on it; no PS2 games that utilize the hard drive can currently run on the PS3. This should be fixed in a future PS3 software patch. Details from an IGN report:

Games that use the hard disk will currently not run. The problem is that the built-in PS3 hard disk cannot currently be used as a PS2 hard disk. We haven't tried it out ourselves, but this means games like Final Fantasy XI and Nobunaga's Ambition Online won't work.

For now at least. The good news is that Sony plans on making hard disk based PS2 games compatible in a future system software update. The list of titles that will work once this magic system update is carried is basically just Nobunaga's Ambition Online, Final Fantasy XI and the Play Online viewer, and Front Mission Online in all their variations, including expansions.

Further information will be posted as it is available...
