News Item: FFXI on the PS3

The recently released PS3 in Japan can run many PS2 games. At this time, Final Fantasy XI cannot run on it; no PS2 games that utilize the hard drive can currently run on the PS3. This should be fixed in a future PS3 software patch. Details from an IGN report:

Games that use the hard disk will currently not run. The problem is that the built-in PS3 hard disk cannot currently be used as a PS2 hard disk. We haven't tried it out ourselves, but this means games like Final Fantasy XI and Nobunaga's Ambition Online won't work.

For now at least. The good news is that Sony plans on making hard disk based PS2 games compatible in a future system software update. The list of titles that will work once this magic system update is carried is basically just Nobunaga's Ambition Online, Final Fantasy XI and the Play Online viewer, and Front Mission Online in all their variations, including expansions.

Further information will be posted as it is available...

Well that solves my holiday shopping budget dilemma. No need to buy it until FFXI can run on it. With all the millions put into this console you'd figure at least 1 programmer might have seen this coming.

When the PS3 internal software is updated to run FFXI, that's all it will do -- just let FFXI operate, the same way that it has on the PS2. Unless S-E wants to go to the cost of converting it to a PS3 native format like they did with the Xbox 360 (and they haven't said anything about this, to my knowledge) it will remain nearly identical to running the game on a PS2.

sounds kinda strange.. ps3 has a harddrive... ffxi installs on a hard drive and should be able to detect it by default and just start unloading its crap on the HD. well i guess ps3 is officially worthless until summer 2007 when the good games start releasing.

yeah, it'll look exactly the same... maybe some rough edges blended out... maybe IF we're lucky some video lag killed when there are too many people on screen. (network lag won't go anywhere ;;).

I'm sure they'll just take the Xbox version which was a direct port of the PC version almost... and put it on PS3 O.o

Yes, you might be right thats just what they might do, translate the Xbox 360 version to the ps3 and from what I hear the ps3 cpu is just a double stack of the xbox 360's anyway, so it wont take much for it to be up and running.

It's not strange at all. The official PS2 HDD was a modified Maxtor or Seagate with additional firmware added by Sony. The reason PS2 games wouldn't detect a normal computer hard drive was because they were programmed to do a firmware check on the HDD, and if no Sony firmware was found, HDD support wouldn't be enabled. That's how Sony forced people to pay $100-200 (Japan had the HDD launch at over 20,000 yen) for a $50 40 GB hard drive at 5400 RPM. The PS3 uses OEM Seagate harddrives without modified firmware, so PS2 HDD support won't pass the firmware check on the drive, and thus won't enable support to detect the drive. Until Sony patches the PS3 system firmware to emulate the PS2 HDD firmware so the pass will check, no PS2 HDD support is going to function on the PS3. I've been warning people about how the PS2 HDD support works, and that this would be a likely issue for compatability for about 6 months now.

Unofficial software like HDLoader could use non-Sony hard drives because it wasn't bound by Sony's rules, and thus didn't have to do the firmware check.

xbox360 version is just an emulator like the pc version... all the graphics files, process handling, etc, are likely the same as default pc just 360 defaults at a higher resolution and probably under a few graphics filters. It's nothing special... they just had to write the emulator for 360 OS.

Game lag is client side only. Server side has no problem at all. Because basically everything is being dumped on the cpu and almost nothing is pushed to your vid card having the fastest possible cpu for pc will make things much smoother. Can be tested: run a fast cpu with an ATI 9000/NV 4200 and then switch them to ATI x900/NV 6200. There won't be any increase in fps at all. You will see a difference if you change from, say an old AMD 2500+ to a fancy dual core one. You'll be able to put the res up on the game then.

Just like how ps2 had ps1 compatibility in a mostly emulated way in which not 100% of ps1 games would run or look all that great (DQ7 actually managed to look worse on ps2 lol, what an achievement).

I dont think the problem is the ps3's hard drive its the fact that PS2 FFXI came with it installed on the PS2 HDD so there no way to get it from the PS2 to the PS3 (unless they release some special cable for $746). I think SE said once that FFXI won't be playable on PS3, I might be tripping out tho.

Not so. I had a HDD crash and had to have Sony replace it. When it came back it was blank and I had to reload all FFXI from game disks. So if it could be done that way for PS2 why not PS3.

FFXI was only preinstalled on American HDDs, and still came with install discs, which you had to use to rekey PlayOnline Viewer to your PS2 instead of the one used to preinstall at Sony. Japanese FFXI players had to install the game from scratch whenever they got it, since FFXI was sold seperately from the HDD. I imported a Japanese PS2, HDD, and FFXI in mid-2002, and I still use my Japanese account.

The problem is that the install discs can't see the PS3 HDD because they are scanning it for Sony's PS2 HDD firmware, and if they don't see that firmware they don't detect a HDD, so they can't install the game. The discs will boot fine, they just will say no HDD is present, so they won't let you install.

I am not going to get all technical like some of these folks but..... I need to point out that it is not Sony's responsibility to creat their systems to be compatible with certain games. If SE wants to be playable on the PS3 it is ultimately their responsibility to do so. With the steady decline in the Van'Deil census numbers I can only speculate that should SE decide to make the appropriate modification to their software it will coincide with a re-release of FFXI after a major Marketing Drive to re-generate interest in the game. I personally welcome fresh and legitimate noobs to the game. The old professional noobs are getting tiresome.

FFXI is a significant game, and the harddrive was a significant feature. Sony lost me as a customer when they dropped that from the PS2.2 (I bought a 360 instead of another used PS2).

Sony doesn't care about their customers and that is their responsibility. But they'll still sell all the units they produce, so I doubt they care.

Not sure how well this has been kept up to date. Doesn't seem like it has. A notification though but as of Nov. 28th, 2006 Sony had released an update v1.11 for the PS3 which has reportedly allowed the PS3 to play the few previous PS2 games that it couldn't. Including FFXI.

via Joystiq:
A PlayStation 3 firmware update is now available for the system, nudging it along from version 1.30 to 1.31. While the US update page still doesn't list the contents of the download (c'mon Sony, if you can write the code and push it live, you can at least let us know what's in it), the Japanese page does. So now we stumble around, trying to decipher Japanese and piece together just what it is we've just stuck on our PS3. According to this machine translated page, they've added "installation of hard disk private PlayStation®2 standard software." Sure, this doesn't make any sense but if you think like a machine (follow this link), you'll realize they surely mean that PS2 software that heretofore required that system's HDD attachment is now functional. This includes Nobunaga's Ambition Online and Final Fantasy XI.

The Japanese page instructs us to download the "PS2 System Data" from the PlayStation Store; however, try as we might, we're unable to find the download. We're guessing a copy of either of the aforementioned titles may be required to install this functionality. Regardless, it's clear that -- especially if they're going to insist on frequent, mandatory updates -- Sony should consider being more communicative with their audience. Kaz, now that you're over in Japan, let 'em know that gamers in North America care about this stuff too!

PS3 has all the PS2 CPU and GPU inside it for running ps2 games(like 2 consoles in one) so its not going to look better or even really run better the HD in side the ps2 on it has the files for ffxi inside an image file that sits on the HD and thats probly where the problem is since the PS3 seems to have the HD just open more for file sharing and what not and doesnt seem to hide its files inside an image. So they probly just have to build support to load the old ps2 image file setup onto the PS3 HD.

Far as i know no one has gotten into this image file at all so its one reason you can't dat mod the ps2 like you can the PC. No idea about the Xbox360

The ps2 version of FFXI does run on the PS3 now you just have to d/l a free file from the playstaion store. Then it partitions off 10GB of your HDD to run PS2 games. The graphics and such are still the ps2 crappy graphics but with its improved graphic card and processors it runs alot smoother then it ever did on ps2. I am hoping that they release a version just for ps3 like they did xbox 360 I want the better graphics it look so bad next to my pc...lol
