Quote from: bungiefan
sounds kinda strange.. ps3 has a harddrive... ffxi installs on a hard drive and should be able to detect it by default and just start unloading its crap on the HD. well i guess ps3 is officially worthless until summer 2007 when the good games start releasing.
It's not strange at all. The official PS2 HDD was a modified Maxtor or Seagate with additional firmware added by Sony. The reason PS2 games wouldn't detect a normal computer hard drive was because they were programmed to do a firmware check on the HDD, and if no Sony firmware was found, HDD support wouldn't be enabled. That's how Sony forced people to pay $100-200 (Japan had the HDD launch at over 20,000 yen) for a $50 40 GB hard drive at 5400 RPM. The PS3 uses OEM Seagate harddrives without modified firmware, so PS2 HDD support won't pass the firmware check on the drive, and thus won't enable support to detect the drive. Until Sony patches the PS3 system firmware to emulate the PS2 HDD firmware so the pass will check, no PS2 HDD support is going to function on the PS3. I've been warning people about how the PS2 HDD support works, and that this would be a likely issue for compatability for about 6 months now. Unofficial software like HDLoader could use non-Sony hard drives because it wasn't bound by Sony's rules, and thus didn't have to do the firmware check.
