I've seen people running around with NPC characters helping them. I've had a look around but cant find any information on how to get this. Could someone link me to some info on this?

The main NPC Fellows come from a
quest set
, which is probably what you're looking for. Do note the requirements, though; you have to be rank 4+ and level 30+ to start the quests that lead to getting an NPC Fellow.
