I was just curious as to what some high level WHMs (or not) think is better for an xp party - mind or mp? maybe a healty mix?

As a WHM43 atm I like to have LOTS of MP and MND. MP is the most important, the more mp you have the more healing you can do.

MND on the other hand is good as well. It increases the potency of your healing spells and I *think* it also decreases the chance of being interrupted while healing. (Very much like Healing Skill lvl)

Anyhoo...MP > MND, but you CAN have both with the right equip and food if you choose. (I recommend pies for MP+ and MND+ or Ginger/Wizard cookies for faster MP regen when healing.

at a lower lvl...mp is far more valuable as the increases you get with more mnd don't have a large impact on you and your abilities.

however mnd at a higher lvl becomes more valuable as it increases your healing abilities and also increases your resistance to mob spells like sleep. I agree that it is possible to get a good mix of mp and mnd bonus with armor, but if I had to pick one over the other at a higher lvl I would go with mnd and just bring some juices and food that help with MP. Also helps to have a rdm or brd in a pt to restore mp for you using refresh or ballad.

i am a 56 whm and i find it is better at higher lvl's once yo ucan get seers stuff.. so at about 30ish to 40ish it is better to have +mp regen. that because during a battle you should go through from about 300mp depending on who your main tank is and what your fighting. however i find this is about what i go through. however now i have +mp regen from the rdm or brd so this could be more. but if i have a base mp of 766mp i am at about 500ish.
so i find the +mp regen is better so once you can go for that.

at 56, i have dark staff, and ginger cookies, and a few items that give me +mp regen so it's like about 15-18 mp regen + extra while resting and then if i have a rdm or brd in a party ... i shouldn't run outa mp!

but for lower lvl's +mp and then +mnd.

It seems to me that MND has a lot more to do with divine magic damage than healing magic. You need a lot of MND to raise healing magic output even by just 1, so I would say MP is best. I'm only lvl 57 though, so I don't know if that changes when you get on higher lvl's. Personally I don't have a problem with MP, so I mostly go for MND anyway. :P

As mentioned, Mushroom Stew is a very good food for whm, it has +MP, +MPh, and +MND, and it even has -ENM. Just look it up for the values...

I am a elvaan whm and i go mainly for MND and the reason is 1st MND = Healing strength meaning i can cast cure V for 1000 and theres not a taru in life who can match it.
2nd having MP and dying for how many cures you have to cast is pointless imo ex. WhmA cast cure IV @ 500 WhmB cast cure IV for 650 the A mage would have to cast 2x as many cures to main heal the party for lack of MND and acrue aggro in the mean time. And tarus for as much MP as they have are all 1 shot candidates so they never get to cast off a full clip of mana with out dying so having that much MP and not being able to use it is pointless.. keep up that MND and the world will be your oyster

Depend on race really. Like I would never ask my Tarutaru mage friends what to get for my Hume WHM, they have less MP problem than us, so for them, it's obvious that Stat+>MP+ for them.

If you are Hume or Mithra, a healthy balance would be ok, I tend to boost MP more than MND myself, since I believe a few extra weaker cure is worth more than a stronger cure. As an Elvaan, I would expect MP+ > MND+, Elvaan has highest MND in game, but low MP. Galka, needless to say, MP. Tarutaru, MND+ and a little MP+ if you feel the need, but generally stat+ > MP+ for taru.

For food, I wouldn't recommend expensive stuffs like Mushroom Stew. I'd say Ginger Cookies(NQ at low lvl, HQ at higher lvl), Roast Mushroom(NQ or HQ, whichever you prefer) are the best, I sometimes just eat cookies in EXP Party, they help me regain faster after each fight(or sometimes during fight).

Thanks for all the info, I quit my WHM at level 60 for financial reasons (No vermy ;;) and want to start it up again. ~I want to be the best there is~ WHM for life hehe.
Looks like I gotta do some testing with MND and MP see what works the best, maybe I will post my results to help other out.

You do NOT need vermillion for WHM... In fact, it is a piece of junk to anyone but SMN.

1. You will have a RDM or BRD in party for 9/10 parties, your leader will always try to find a RDM or BRD, this has become a standard already. Real Refresh > Auto-Refresh; Ballads > Auto-Refresh.

2. Auto-Refresh helps as much as Auto-Regen when you are tanking an IT: in another word, no help what-so-ever. In a party with or without refresher, auto-refresh cannot keep up with your MP usage in exp party.

3. Learn MP management, it is NOT impossible to keep enough MP for chain5+ without a refresher/auto-refresh.

4. You WILL want to save that money for the noble cloak instead, which has auto-refresh, and cure potency+(the main reason for buying noble).

5. Vermillion Cloak is a waste of gil, time and space, save it for the SMN, they will find it incredibly useful(not joking). In my LS static party, I tested this overrated piece of junk myself, I had better MP recovery rate changing to seer when rest, than to wear this junk.

Those are my reasons, in both my BLM and WHM lvling, I hardly found that cloak useful, sure I did get myself Black Cloak and Noble tunic respectively, but for the elemental+ and cure potency+, not auto-refresh. Auto-refresh helps when you are sneak/invisible-ing party to camp(so that little bit of MP is recovered by the time you get to camp).

1.) V-Cloak-Refresh & Refresh & Ballad stacks, right?
So if you have +1MP/3sec running for several hours while leveling, it gains a SNM HOW much more MP than a WHM? Right: NOT 1 Mp more.
So if you got it: great! More MP to channel into the tank.

But true:
It is not essencial.
I'm WHM 66 yet and got no money for the V-Cloak yet.
If I did, I would buy it and sell it later for the Noble's, sure.
But the V-Cloak is a great thing to have from 59-68.

PS.:
We all agree that the dark staff IS essential.
Yet I somehow managed to do my job well without it up to lvl 55, when I finally came up with the money for it.
So being able to do a party without an item is no prove for its uselessnes.
It just makes it harder. ;)

but that's not why i'm not wearing holy ampulla and phial
the fact is mp keep your party alive...but with HL stuff like noble tunic and 1 refresher you can manage (in /smn) to have 5mp/tic refresh...and that's very important coz you can have an extend of mp impossible to jauge...like +50MP/30 sec
that allow you to stuff you with more mnd stuff...
but indeed full zenith with noble tunic stay the better way to be a good healer (in stuff) more if you're elvaan than taru...:p
neway don't forget that if you lose some benefit from /smn you gain auto refresh and more mnd than with /blm...a faster mp regen while healing and of course +30~mp boost @ lvl 75

Basically, there are four kinds of WHM builds. Each one has its own unique advantages and disadvantages the effects of which are only limited by your playing style.

The Advantages:

1. MP build. This build goes for +MP first. It means you have a lot of spells to play with giving you extra versatility in battle.

2. +hMP build. This build focuses on getting MP back as quickly as possible. It works in a pinch, since you can concievably get back 60+ MP every 10 seconds.

3. +MND build. This one focuses on cure potency. No one can match the raw curing power of a +MND build.

4. +Haste build. With a +Haste build, WHMs can cast cures faster than any other job in the game. It comes in handy when your tank eats a TP move that takes away 90% of his life.

The Disadvantages:

1. MP Build. This build lacks the cure potency and ability to regain MP that the other two "main" builds have. Even though you can last a long time, once your MP runs out, it takse forever to get back.

2. +hMP build. This build neither has the potency of the MND build nor the sheer versatility of the MP Build. Sure, you can get MP back fast, but who's to say someone won't die in those 10 seconds..?

3. +MND build. Your spell potency has no equal, but a lack of MP can make it difficult to keep up. Who cares how strong your Cure Vs are if you can only cast 3-4 of them before resting..?

4. +Haste Build. This is build burns through MP faster than any other. It lacks the MP of the MP build and the potency of the +MND build. You have to pay careful attention to detail and not go "cure crazy." Which can be difficult with near-instant Cure Vs and a 5 second recast timer...

All WHMs use some combination of these 4 techniques. However, specialization in one or two is common. None of them is the end-all, beat-all build. They each fulfill specific needs in a party (or HNM) setting. My reccomendation is to just experiment a little with different gear and see which you like best.

Oh, and: The Vermillion Cloak may suck, but 1-tick auto refresh = 3 MP every 9 seconds. Seer's = 1 hMP every 10 seconds. Seer's is not as good at giving back MP. It is, however, way cheaper...

As a 75 mithra whm, I'm replacing my Haste gear with Clerics bit by bit.

The mp bonus, mnd bonus, and haste bonus from Blessed is great as a all around gear set. Fit my attitude and my needs nicely . The only draw backs to it were, no built in auto refresh.

For the Auto-refresh I had to level my SMN (Held out until 56+ for avatars before levelin). Oddly, It isn't as useful as it should be. Tonight, for first time in a long time, I used a Noble's body piece WITH auto-refresh for the tenzen fight.

Not only was it not useful, It removed some of my haste, I couldn't whip out the spells as quick as I wanted. It hindered me. Now when I handed the nobles back, the goodness returned.

Overall, in exp for 50+ with /smn ... You'll have auto-refresh, and chances are you'll also be in the Expansion area's with Sanctions.

Grab yourself +mnd and +mp gear on the cheap, get yourself Auto-refresh with your sanctions (total of +2mp a tick) and Smack that bard around until he ballads. THAT, coupled with skilling up your cooking to Yag drinks) gives you a NICE bonus while exping.

Fair chunk of the mobs in expansion area's drop Dark crystals (or so I seem to notice at my level), an ingredients if you buy them from a NPC vendor are dirt cheap.

If you're /blm or /rdm You'll want to stick more with +MP gear and +mnd food for the cures. You'll only want +int food if you don't have a rdm or ninja. I find that I don't have time to enfeeble, or end up getting yelled at anyways if I have a RDM or ninja.

I am a 75whm. I start off with mp equipment then as I use up the mp I use a macro to change into MND equipment.

All jobs need macros to change equipment as you need to change stats for what happens in battle.

I have a belt, some low level pants, and of course my dark staff to help regen while healing.
I have a staff that gives me 50 mp as well as rings etc for mp.
I keep def and evasion equipmment. I like evasion the best using def only when that slot has no evasion equipment in my inventory. Evasion helps so I have time to cast if being hit by a mob.

Because I have so much mp equipment I stoped using pies and use chocolates and cookies for fast healing mp. I sit during a battle and quickly build enough mp to heal and use haste in which I use a macro to change my equipment before I cast.

With the exception of things like BCNM battles where one needs to walk in without the need to heal for the battles need mp right then.Then I use pies.

some of these comments seem to be left by people that haven\'t leveled whm past 37.

The Taru 1 shot canditates comment is funny because I have more HP and MP as a taru whm than 99% of the other whm I see. /blm 1100hp/1200mp, /smn 1000hp/1300mp. If I wanted +MND, I could get +60 or higher and still have well over 1000mp and both nobles/templar mace on for potency. I found it better to wear a combination of +MND, +healing magic, +enhancing magic, -35% cure cast speed from merits and clogs, +resists and +MP gear all at once instead of stacking on one area alone. I guess if I wore all my -hp/+mp gear to get 500hp/1600mp then maybe I\'d be a one shot candidate but thats just silly to do and asking for death. :-P

early on +MND does pretty much nothing for standard exp pts. Not until Cure V do you really see a difference from it. My food varies depending on what I need to do. HNM - mushroom stew or mushroom risoto; EXP - Marron Glance or cookies depending on type of pt setup;

As a 75 whm who subs smn for the most part it depends on the situation. Most people laugh at the fact that I have 1439 MP and only 530ish HP. That is without food. The 1 shot taru mentality is only for those that are always pulling hate. I can cure more in a serious situation than most elvaan\'s with twice the HP and I live while they die. +Mnd gear is great for those that need the added cure power if they don\'t have the gear to make up for it. With my normal whm gear I have a total of +22 to Cure potency and if it\'s lightsday I also get another 10% added onto that. Depending on your race that should be the biggest factor on which gear to go with. For those low on the MP go for that. I personally like to live on the edge for my whm so the more MP and the less HP I have the funner the situation is for me.

As a whm who has done almost everything ffxi has to offer, i found that MND is a pretty useless trait as far as max heals are concerned. HMP gear and MP gear are your best friends ealry on, but endgame cure potency/haste/hmp/mp/conserve mp/refresh...just about everything should take priority over MND

having a high max MP is next to useless in a high lvl xp party, as you are nearly constantly fighting something, and should be curing/hasteing/banishing before you get 100% MP. In other words, what\'s the point of having a large possible amount of MP when you\'re never going to heal to gain that much. I also recommend BLM sub over SMN sub for a WHM in a high lvl xp party, as the conserve MP trait gained from BLM more or less cancels out the auto-refresh of SMN, the high max MP being not advantageous as already discussed. True, you will get 4 or 5 extra MND from having a SMN sub, but this will hardly affect your cure potency, and the magic attack bonus trait gained from BLM will do a lot more for your banish potency than will a few extra points of MND. BLM sub also has a lot of other bonuses, such as warp, escape, tractor, and elemental seal+sleep (which will sleep any xp monster if your enfeebling magic is not crappy). For equipment, choose haste/auto-refresh/+hMP/MND and maybe some def/eva gear if you have a propensity to get hit a lot. I myself go for a lot of MND gear (75 WHM/BLM Mithra at 133 MND) cause i like to cast banish a lot, but you don\'t have to do that lol
