July 18, 2005 FFXI Patch Notes

[Event-Related]

A new chapter has been added to “Chains of Promathia.”

A new quest called “The Fellowship Quest” has been added. Upon completion of this quest, the player will receive an item used to call an NPC.
-The NPC may not be called during NPC escort quests, but may be used along with beastmasters’ pets, summoners’ avatars, and dragoons’ wyverns.
-The NPC may only be called in certain field areas.
-The NPC may fight monsters, gain experience, and level up with the player.
-A player fighting with an NPC fellow will receive only 70% of the usual experience points gained for solo battles.
-The NPC may be called only when there are less than six members in the player’s group. A party may contain a maximum of three NPC fellows, along with the three players who have called them.
-If the NPC’s level exceeds that of the player, its status will be adjusted to match the player’s level.
-The NPC’s equipment will occasionally change after fighting several battles.
-The NPC will leave if the player:
-temporarily logs out to PlayOnline
-logs out
-enters a different area
-is KO’d
-All NPCs in a party will leave if the party attempts to increase its total number of players and NPCs to seven.

Several new quests have been added, including:
-A quest in which the player may acquire headgear that resembles various beastmen
-Rematches with mammets and the Mithran sin hunters
And more!

An NPC that tells the player’s fortune regarding titles and other “elements” has been added in Mhaura.

Character title selection has been changed in the following ways:
-It now costs less gil to change a player’s title. Also, it now costs no gil at all to check the player’s list of available titles.
-The NPC bard that changes player titles will now sing out the player’s title just before changing it.
-After changing the player’s title, the NPC bard will sing out the new title. Nearby PCs will also be able to hear the new title.
-The player will now have the option to have a random title selected for him or her at no cost once each day (Earth time).
-Titles earned by defeating NMs are now available for selection not just at Selbina and Mhaura, but also at Kazham and Rabao.

A chocobo riding game has been added. The player must deliver a chocobo from the chocobo stables where the quest was offered to a designated nation.

Players are now able to talk to an NPC and check the remaining time until they are able to reenter the battlefield for the ENM quests “Pulling the Strings” and “Automaton Assault.”

“Return Ring” and “Homing Ring” have been added to the list of items that may be earned by exchanging conquest points.

If a player has completed the quests to get a pair of Mannequin Pumps or a Minstrel’s Dagger but disposed of the item he earned, the player may now reacquire the item at the same place he attained it.

Mythril Plate Armor has been added to the list of equipment that may be stored as a key item.

A new NPC that will trade items for treasure earned by defeating Lumorian monsters has been added.
[Battle-Related]

Players are now able to earn experience from monsters of a wider level range than previously possible. Experience points earned by defeating “decent challenge” and “easy prey” monsters will also increase in some instances.

Experience chain bonuses in level-restricted areas of Chains of Promathia are now determined by the level of the player while in that area, rather than the player’s actual level.

Monster locations have been adjusted, particularly in Chains of Promathia areas. The following areas will be affected:
Bibiki Bay, Uleguerand Range, Attohwa Chasm, Newton Movalpolos, Promyvion – Holla, Promyvion – Dem, Promyvion – Mea, Promyvion – Vahzl, Lufaise Meadows, Phomiuna Aqueducts, the Sacrarium, Riverne – Site #A01, Riverne – Site #B01, the Garden of Ru’Hmet, Ro’Maeve, the Boyahda Tree, the Den of Rancor, the Shrine of Ru'Avitau, Kuftal Tunnel

The damage and accuracy of a player’s ranged attack are now calculated based on the distance of the player from the monster. This determination varies from weapon to weapon, as does the ideal distance for maximum damage. In addition, the higher the monster’s level is with regard to the player, the less damage will be dealt with a ranged attack.

The player’s enmity now decreases when a shadow image created by Utsusemi is absorbed by an attack.

Weather will no longer have an effect on the distance a player can be detected for monsters that detect based on the use of magic.

Several new notorious monsters have been added.

Creatures summoned by monsters (excluding elementals) have had their names changed to “(Monster’s name)’s Avatar” for consistency.

The strength of monster techniques has been adjusted, particularly in Chains of Promathia areas.

A player who is KO'd, revived, then while still in a weakened state KO'd again will now, after a second reviving, temporarily experience a weakened attack and accuracy loss for magic and ranged attacks.

Before the update, a player who fought a monster without using auto-attack would retain his claim on the monster, even if he was KO’d in battle due to poison, etc. This has been fixed so that when the player dies, the monster becomes unclaimed.

Before the update, a monster that was claimed by a party or alliance would occasionally go unclaimed when magic or a weapon skill was used on the monster as the monster moved out of range before the magic or weapon skill could strike.
[Item-Related]

Trading a wijnruit and 99 ninja tools to a certain NPC can now earn the player a toolbag. This item may be gathered in stacks of twelve, essentially increasing the player’s ninja tool inventory capacity twelvefold.

New synthesis recipes have been added.

Prices at guilds have been changed to reflect the amount of each item the guild currently has in stock. The cost may rise to a maximum of five times the original price.

Some of the treasure items earned from notorious monsters in the Boyahda Tree have been changed.

The way that the following items are acquired has been changed:
Archer Ring, Leaping Boots, Emperor Hairpin, Peacock Charm
In addition, players may receive an EX/Rare or EX item with the same attributes from the monsters who previously dropped each of the above items.

The effects of the following items have been altered:
Poison Potion, Venom Potion, Paralyze Potion, Sleeping Potion, Silencing Potion, Blinding Potion, Vitriol, Instant Warp, Bastok Mines gate glyph, Bastok Markets gate glyph, Port Bastok gate glyph, Eastern San d'Oria gate glyph, Western San d'Oria gate glyph, Northern San d'Oria gate glyph, Windurst Waters gate glyph, Port Windurst gate glyph, Windurst Woods gate glyph, New Year’s gift, Cantarella, Black Drop, Muting Potion, Invitriol, Warp Cudgel, Trick Staff II, Treat Staff II, Teleport ring: Holla, Teleport ring: Dem, Teleport ring: Mea, Teleport ring: Vahzl, Teleport ring: Yhoat, Teleport ring: Altep, Memento Muffler, Gargoyle Boots, Zoolater Hat, Root Sabots, Aries Mantle, Anubis's Knife, Oscar Scarf, Kinkobo, Carpenter's Belt, Blacksmith's Belt, Goldsmith’s Belt, Weaver’s Belt, Tanner’s Belt, Boneworker’s Belt, Alchemist’s Belt, Culinarian’s Belt, Fisherman’s Belt, Counter Earring, Tactical Ring, Wing Gorget, Healing Feather, Spirit Lantern, Astral Pot, Homing Ring, Return Ring, Absorbing Shield, Tavnazian Ring, Ducal Guard's Ring, Maat's Cap, Kingdom Stables Collar, Republic Stables Medal, Federation Stables Scarf, Cursed Beverage, Cursed Soup

The item “Timepiece” has been added to the list of special items a player may receive 100 days after participating in the Vana’diel Adventurer Recruitment Program.

The following item names have been changed in the English version:
Panzer Mask -> Panther Mask
Panzer Mask +1 -> Panther Mask +1
Amemit Mantle -> Amemet Mantle
Amemit Mantle +1 -> Amemet Mantle +1

The item name “Comet” has been changed to “Little Comet.”

An attribute of the following item has been changed:
Darksteel Pick +1 Delay:312 -> Delay:303
[System-Related]

Region Info may now be viewed from all areas.

Messages may no longer be sent using /tell to a player on the user’s blacklist.

Along with the introduction of the Fellowship Quest, players may now combine text commands with <ft> to target their NPC fellows and execute their desired actions. Only the player who called the NPC may target it using <ft>.
[Other Content]

The following changes have been made to Ballista.

-If one side of an official match is low on members, entry into that force is now possible even if a match is already underway. In this case, experience may still be gained if certain conditions are met, just as if the player had entered the match from the start. Also, if a player enters during a match, both forces will receive a message notifying them of the new entry.

The player must have the following in order to enter a match already underway:
-A Ballista License
-Enough gil to enter the match
-The minimum level required for the match being played

-A player who has just entered an official match or a match in Diorama Abdhaljs-Ghelsba that was already underway will temporarily be placed under “Preparing for Battle” status.

-Players may now borrow the key items “Ballista Earring” and “Ballista Band” free of charge from the Pursuivant in Ru’Lude Gardens.
Ballista Earring: When in possession of this item, the player will receive information about the next Ballista match and the entry registration time when entering San d’Oria, Bastok, Windurst, or Jeuno from one day prior to the match (Vana’diel time) until the end of the entry period.
Ballista Band: When in possession of this item, the player will be given the choice of whether to keep or throw away the first Petra he quarries.
*Ownership of a Ballista License is not required to borrow the above items.
*The player may return the items simply by speaking to a Pursuivant.

-Players are no longer able to adjust Petra selection settings in Diorama Abdhaljs-Ghelsba. The player will be given the option of what to do with the first Petra quarried only when in possession of the new key item “Ballista Band.”

-The following rules have been changed from special rules to standard rules.
-Camp locations will change when the number of participants in a match is 40 or less.
-The number of Rooks will be reduced to two when there is a significant difference in the number of players on each side.
-Players will now receive experience points for participating in an official match.

-The system of “Open Entry” for official matches, in which all adventurers were allowed to join the force with the smallest number of participants, has been done away with and replaced by a system called “Temporary Entry,” in which players may join a force regardless of allegiance. However, the player's entry is temporary, and similar to Diorama Abdhaljs-Ghelsba's “Auto-Balance” feature, the players may be redistributed for balance when the match begins.

-In Ru'Lude Gardens, the player will be able to view Diorama Abdhaljs-Ghelsba's reservation status. Reservations for the next two days (Earth time) will be shown.

-The NPC Tillecoe will now inform the player of the match’s level restriction when a match at Diorama Abdhaljs-Ghelsba is set to allow general participation.

-Temporary items will now be distributed at the start of official matches held at the Pashhow Marshlands.

-A section of the Ballista rulebook that is read out by the Pursuivant has been changed.

-The rate of success for Foe Lullaby and Horde Lullaby has been lowered for players with bard as a support job.

-A limit has been imposed on the amount of HP that can be absorbed by Bloody Bolts’ HP Drain effect during Ballista.

That change to those items is certainly a good move; hopefully in the future they'll go down the list of other over-powered and highly-camped items to do the same thing.

This patch looks to be mainly focused on CoP Wrapup and gameplay reassesment. They're tweaking parts of the game that they feel are most problematic: trying to get enough players together to make a group; over-powered items from lower level NMs; having enough mobs to kill in busy zones; the power of Rangers; being able to take down hard mobs by repeated death/raise attacks by Rangers/Black Mages, etc.

There's not much that's really new to the game apart from the NPC Fellows, which is itself a huge shift, depending on how it's implemented. But these sort of patches are very necessary, to fix all those gameplay issues that can combine to make parts of the game really annoying.

Plus, we haven't even seen yet how many interesting new/changed items there are...

That is the end of the (most usual) NM-campers/monopolizers!

Adjusting prices an higher maximum prices in the guilds!
(up to the 5th previous maximum)

That is the end of the shopfarmers!

If only they manage to handle the bot-miners, this could really get a good deal of fresh air in the game again.

I want to know how heavy the update hits the NINs. The Utsusemi-hate-redution has the potential to be MOST unpleasant...

What do you ppl think how much benefit the "stackable stacks" on Ninjitsu-items will bring to those poor fellows?

I see a good and bad point with the ninja shadow nerf. Bad point being there will be a lack of tanks lvl 45 and above. PLD will be the only real tanking job available as hate loss from shadow usage will be detrimental to tanks.

Not to mention this can make a PLD even more effective as a tank with Ninjas in pt (especially RNG/NIN). Rangers are notorious for pulling hate (though that may not be the case anymore), the loss of hate on shadow usage will only help the tank regain hate.

The pro I see of it, myself being a War main is that hopefully people won't have a nin sub requirement when asking a War to party. I love War/Thf and Sneak Attack + Sturmwind is extremely effective especially in skill chains. (i.e. hitting VT Anticans for 500+ in Quicksand)

I am getting tired of having War/Thf flag up, getting invite to pt, and arriving only to be asked Where is your Nin sub we want you to tan?. I am sorry did we miss something here....flag was up as War/Thf was it not.

Love the new item change for Archer Ring, Leaping Boots, Emperor Hairpin, Peacock Charm this may solve some problems. Still will have tons of camping for those who really want the item to start but hopefully that will die off somewhat.

Also being a guy who likes to stick to himself now and then and hates the fact you can't get any xp on your own at higher levels, having the NPC with you may help a person gain some light xp will waiting for a pt.

I think this patch is going to screw this game up more than SE can imagine. Gimping nin is a horrible mistake, now every party is expected to level as slow as a paladin. Gimping ranger now makes that process even slower. As far as the common nm's new drops, I think they're saying that the items they drop will be the same but, in addition, they will drop the items with the same stats but rare/ex. I think this might be nice because it could bring the inflated prices of these items down.

this is ridiculous, some of you whove replied havnt even been in game yet and already you are jumping to conclusions. SE is probably making ninja out to be what it was meant to be.. also if you are a good nin you dont only use utsusemi to keep hate. There are alot of other spells. Also this update promotes thief usage in parties. its a damn good update.

If you're a good nin you'll be able to compensate for the hate reduction, I've seen ninja who can hold hate as good if not better than any PLD out there, and being a BLM I'm in an ideal possition whether to evaluate how good a tank is at holding hate. The bad ninja on the other hand will just suck horribly and probably move onto some other job because they're 'gimped'

I don't find that SE nerf too much on nin jobs. when i play my nin, i never have any enmity+ gear at all. in addition, i don't even give thf a chance to do initial sata on me just for additional hate but still i can hold hate easily. yeah there are spells (even food) that will give you hate, even utsusemi also give you hate. i don't think nin will have too much prob to hold hate unless there are like 2 conditions happen. 1st nin get hit too much (more heals on nin), 2nd melee do too much dmg (spamming slug or drk/war especially^^;) or even blm overnuked all the time.

I dont think that NIN's will be too much nerfed, i will just show who is a good NIN and who is not :) And the stackable Ninja Tool's ..this is BS. Is anyone here who REALLY need 12 x 99 Kaginawa or Sarui-ran or w/e tool? Not even Shihei i need in such huge numbers, 5-6 stack for a whole day in sky tops, everything else 1 stack. And if you really cary around 12 of each those stacks...you loose more inventory space than before because the stack you use actually and the stacks in the quiver >< pointless.

The RNG nerf will be more worse especially at KB and Kirin >< with Gun it will be almost impossible to do "ok" dmg...but we will see.

The changes to these items are a HUGE step into the right direction, i would love to see E-Bow, CC's, Ochiudo's Kote and some other items to be rare/ex as well, so players will have a chance to camp them instead of gaining huge amounts of gil to buy. I wonder which NM's in Boyahada Tree will be changed, but i think it has to be Aquarius which is camped by Gil-Sellers all day (Vermillion Cloak price 6,5 mio on Odin ><..more than SH).

over all a good update, just the RNG & NIN nerf wasnt needed, but oh well...

I am really sick of everyone jumping to conclusions. You need to see ways around this and find new and different ways to play your job and adjust to the updates rather than giving up before it even started. This should seperate the good ninja tank from the bad ninja tanks. There are many ways to hold hate other than recasting utsusemi and provoke. Now you will need to start relying on food, equipment, throwing skill, SATA, etc. This change will also help out thieves and rangers who sub ninja, as for when pulling and spamming ranged attacks. This will also make warrior mains sigh with relief for those who've always wanted to be all out DD.

As for the distance for ranged attack damage/accuracy, I find this sligtly disappointing yet pleasantly realisitc. Also it's a slight burden off of samurai's shoulders keeping up with their hyper fast TP from constant ranged attacks and melee hits with their axes/daggers. Also it helps seperate hate within 3 sections: ranged, mages, and close combat. Just be careful not to wander off near aggro. >_>

The new NPC companion thing looks rather fun, however, I wouldn't trust a NPC in exp party battle due to lack of human emotion, judgement and intelligence. However, for doing quests, missions and whatnot, this can prove rather useful and fun especially since it's so difficult to get a helping hand on what needs to get done.

I am very pleased with the rare/ex and ex adjustments on NM drops. This will hopefully greatly reduce excessive camping and monopolization ushering inflation on our servers. Now everyone should have a fair chance to get their hands on decent NM items. Hopefully SE will consider doing this for other NM items in the near future.

I am also happy that this update will make exping alot more interesting and varied due to experience flexability with monster difficulty along with relocation so crowded camps can ease up and fight different things.

Overall this update should bring some good changes to help everyone ease up, find new and different ways to play and overall have fun ^^

Holding hate isn't solely the tank's job; it's everyones duty to make sure the tank is the one being hit.

I just wanna know where do you start the "Fellowship Quest" and what does the quest intail? also i don't understand what they mean by changing the way you get Archer's Ring, Leaping Boots, Emperor's Ring etc. Changing it how? also about new NMs, where?

First of all this is by no means the end of NIN tanking, in fact, SE has already demonstrated that they have embraced NIN tanking, if you look at all the gear nin has.
What this update will do is dramatically increase how costly the nin job will be, which IMO something should really be done about. If anything, they are leveling the playing field a bit, which is great, and you know, if you're a NIN in a pt full of /nin, you'll be able to keep hate just the same as normal, because the others have the same hate reduction you do.
Sound familiar? That's what paladins have to deal with every day, and yeah PLD has more hate job abilities, but for a nin who can afford it, tanking will be no different, and I think SE is trying by this to increase the tool and throwing ability usage, who knows maybe next update NIN will get some job abilities.
As for the ranger job, its really depresing that this is getting nerfed, you say they're gearing towards THF parties? Thats not the case though when you consider that rangers will now have to stand a good deal away from the mobs in order to do any real damage. That means as soon as a ranger pulls hate, the mob will move out of range and the sata will error out leaving the th at 0% tp.
I really don't mind the 'RNG nerf' but surely they realized this beforehand? I'm in a static with a RNG THF and NIN and this sounds like its really going to cause problems with a sata weaponskill. I just hope that SOME weapons still allow a ranger to deal decent damage wile at close range.
As for the rest of the things in the update, it sounds really great, I'm hoping for new NMs in Sea and also i'm rather excited that they're changing the low level nms to drop rare/ex items. I think more 'gear' drops should be rare/ex.
Slowly but (maybe?) surely, SE is realizing what needs to be done to keep their game in balance.

The Ninja and Ranger tweaks have been beat to death elsewhere; there's not much more to say until we actually see them in action, to know whether or not they are positive gameplay changes.

Will do! I have a feeling it might take a bit to figure out where some of those items are now located, though; when the Astral Ring was moved, it took a few days to know for certain where it was loading.

The new quests should be fairly easy to figure out, since (hopefully) the prerequisites for them won't be very high, and the starting info is easy to get.

Well for one I have to say is THANK GOD they finally desicided to do something about the gilsellers. I for one have tried to get a pair of Leaping boots and an Emp pin on many occasions for my thf and nin but haven't been able to cause of so many campers who are there for the gil instead of the item.

Now what they are doing to nins is kind of shocking but not surpirsing. Nins can be tanks but they origionally where not designed for it in my oppinion. But now they are starting to come out with the enmity + gear and its killing the plds. This will just seperate the good from the bad. It will make nin more challenging and interesting to play and I for one can't wait to start lvling nin again.

These items ARE NOT going to be changed to EX, they are being MOVED to other places, most likely BC's.

Those NM's are going to drop NEW rare/ex and ex items INSTEAD of thier old items.

This is Astral Ring again, and that backfied (at least on Ragnarok, the price nearly doubled).

Level as slow as a pld? O.O I clear 30-40k a party @ 75 as pld.
