Questions about Waking The Beast

I tried looking all around, but wans't able to find the answer I was looking for:
I was wondering if you have to beat all the 6 avatars again in order to fight Carbuncle after you beat him once.
Or
can you just re-accept the quest again and head straigh to Carbuncle without doing the 6 avatars all over again.

You must defeat all 6 avatars separately then with all 6 key items go to the Full Moon Fountain and defeat a series of 'waves of avatars (e.g 1st battle Carby, 2nd, 2 avatars, 3rd Carby, 4th 3 Avatars etc.) with the final showdown of Carbuncle splitting himself into 5 Carbies each with the ability to 2hr.
