Question for all you tech-heads...

Experiencing a problem with FFXI's play speed, on occasion getting down to 4 or 5 FPS. This is most common when AoE spells (particularly bard songs) are being cast, which nearly causes graphical gameplay to stop completely for a moment. While anywhere even slightly busy in terms of rendering, it tends to hover around 19 FPS. So basically, serious graphical lag issues. I've tried everything I can think of, and every setting in FFXI's config, and nothing seems to eliminate the problem, although turning the settings to super ugly helps a bit. The other problem is, this didn't always happen, it's either been since an update or since I've went thru some newer hardware. Used to run the game with AF and AA on. Specs will be below, and please don't reply with "hey, try this to see if it'll work" statements; rest assured I'm not computer stupid, im just out of all the options I know, barring hardware incompatibility that isnt listed in any FAQ that comes with the game. My buddy's computer is about half as good as mine, yet his runs the game flawlessly. You can imagine how irritating that is.

I'm either trying to narrow it down to a piece of hardware or some hidden driver issue, so I'd like to hear from people that have strong systems, but still experience similar issues.

Hardware =
Gigabyte 8I915P Duo-A (915P intel chipset)
2gigs DDR2 ram
Pentium 4 (prescott) 3.0ghz
WD 80gb HDD, 8megs cache
Nvidia 6600GT (used to be OC'ed but this didnt help either)
SB Audigy soundcard (this thing is questionable, driver-wise, but it was part of the setup back when the game ran fine, too)

Once again, the game didnt always run bad, just apparently decided to run like crap one day, and never stopped since. I've tried newest drivers, oldest drivers, and almost everything inbetween, i've reinstalled windows to rollback directX to an earlier version, tried all manner of hardware OC and settings tweaking, nothing works. There's no sense in being able to run half life 2 on highest detail with AA and AF on smoothly, and then not being able to run a game with almost less processing requirements than Postal 2. I can even run Oblivion smoothly on its "nice" settings, so long as i dont push it. Anyone that's had this issue and managed to clear it up, or knows someone who did, and how they did it, please reply.

If everything else works the problem can be pretty much isolated to FFXI. This may mean some corrupted .dat files, I'm not too sure since I've never had the problem, but it seems the most likely. Try reinstalling FFXI, it may be worth the pain.

Before jumping to a whole weekend of reinstalling the game, try the Check Files feature within POL. You say this started after an update, so that might catch a corrupted file.

IIRC, it's right on the login screen of POL (so you'll need to Logout back to the start of POL if you auto-login, bypassing the login screen.) On the left hand side is a list of options and you want "Check Files". It'll take awhile but it's certainly no reinstallation. I've used this before to find/fix errors.

Good luck. I have a problem that even reinstallation hasn't fixed. My POL itself is insanely laggy with 8-bit NES quality graphics ever since some update a good 2+ years ago. Once FFXI initiates it's 100% fine; just POL itself is permanently screwed and takes 5mins to navigate into the game. SE tech support was run by monkeys, telling me to 'disable my sound card and reboot thxbai'! Nothing I do, new POL updates, updating my drivers, etc, can fix this after-an-update problem. At least mine is livable, hopefully yours won't fall into that category as it's an in-game problem.

The problem is with the Nvidia graphics drivers.

Check the playonline ffxi web page for supported driver versions. The old version work fine with my 6600GT.

This is good info here =) that, and I'm also checking the files on FFXI right now, just incase, but this has been several re-installs of the game since...its been going on for about 6 months (probably should have mentioned that). I'm also in the process of rolling back my drivers, try that out too. Thanks for the info, i'll let ya know if it helps.

The video driver was the problem it seems. Tried a few versions around the listed one also and noticed the same slowdown, so needless to say the game is infinitely picky about this. Just incase anyone needs to know, the 66.93 driver set is the one listed as compatible with the Geforce6 series GPU's. Nearly all the others, regardless of how new, seem to cause graphical lag.
