Question about Monster Levels and XP

Okay, I looked at the XP charts at the following address:
http://ffxi.somepage.com/links/exp_table.html
Problem is that some of the numbers look a bit "off". The chart claims that Even Match enemies are the same level as the PC, and thus give 100 XP. It then goes on to say that Level-2 enemies are Decent Challenge and give 50 XP.
Then I see this, for the Tunnel Worm:
http://ffxi.somepage.com/mobdb/367
Level 1. This is backed up by the book as well as many other web sites. Yet when I ake a Level 1 against a Tunnel Worm, it comes up as Decent Challenge and gives 50 XP.
This leads me to believe that Decent Challenge at 50 XP is actually a monster equal to your own level, with Even Match being Level+2. If this is not the case, how do you explain that monsters at Level 1 are Decent Challenge and give 50 XP?

Those experience calculations don't work very well at level 1. The reason is that mobs which are listed level 1 really aren't level 1. They're lower level; technically they're level 0, or even level -1 or -2.
This is done in the game to make it easier for new characters to get experience; if a newbie character with no subjob and starting gear had to kill mobs that were actually his own level, it would be a very difficult process. So, the starting mobs are "less than 1", in order to make it easy to kill them and get those first levels out of the way.
Dealing with "less than 1" is never easy, especially for those of us who don't do well with advanced mathematics. :) So, websites like this and the guide books all say that the lowest level mobs are level 1. In the actual game database, however, they're lower level than that.
Overall, that chart should be accurate, if the mob levels are known accurately. A character just has to get higher than 1, to be dealing with mobs that are *really* level 1+ in order for it all to work.
