changes to PLD

With the addition of Auto - Refresh to PLD it seems to me that at LVL 70 for WHM/BLM/RED PLD would be a good fit as a sub job.

Does it makes sense to to possibly sub something else say SMN for PLD (of course outside of XP PARTY heaven forbid someone do something outside of the norm and HAVE fun).

has anyone toyed with this yet... subbing PLD at high lvl or subbing some type of MAGE job with PLD main.

When you experience the game more, you will understand why the current subjob selections are known as the "best".

Subbing PLD sure would give you auto-refresh, but is it worth the loss of the benefits of a WHM, BLM, or RDM sub? You don't sub WHM because you get more MP+ and MND only, the list of magic you gained from subbing WHM is the main concern: Erase, status cure, Curaga, Raise, etc... Compared with those, what you get on PLD are: JA's that benefit melee more than yourself, auto-refresh, and a small list of magic(you DO NOT need Flash).

Of course, you can possibly sub SAM to a SMN outside of party for all anyone care, but in a party, we need to give our full effort. How would you feel if I sub BLM to SAM(I need warp after party), and use sword instead of great katana in your exp party? Are you gonna say "Let him enjoy the game"? Or are you gonna ask me to use the appropiate gears/subjob? Remember, in a party, everyone count, if one is slacking, the party's performance falls, which is why people only accept certain subjobs.

On the other hand, PLD/mage has already been tested long ago, some say PLD/WHM can backup heal at not-so-emergency situation, some say PLD/WHM can use diaga-invincible to get hate of a group of monsters(usually BC)... But generally speaking, again, you will be expected to sub WAR to tank, sub NIN to do more damage. When SE decide to give PLD a JA that matches provoke, we can start subbing different jobs to PLD.

You are right do not have a lot of xp playing the game. but in my little time I would think that a party built to apply hate to the PLD would give the ability to allow for a PLD to sub a different job. I am refering to building a party with a THF to do SATA.

but thats not what I am looking for in this discussion as to why not. In the interview discussing the changes from the development team... Their point was to make PLD have the ability to sub something else other than war. Is auto-refresh enough of a change to sub something else.

And is it strong enough to consider PLD as a sub job for mages.

To be blunt, no.

The developers have never stated that they want Paladin to regularly use any other subjob than Warrior; in fact, they have stated the reverse, using it as an example of some job/subjob combinations that they consider "standard".

What was stated recently was that they wanted Paladin to be as strong a tank as Ninja, and these recent changes were designed to help with that.

The auto-refresh that Paladins get at level 25 is 1MP/tic, the lowest level MP refresh available. It does not make a significant difference in regular xp fights, but it does help a bit, and is great for times when a Paladin is just running around and fighting occasionally.

If a mage wants an auto-refresh, they are generally better off using Summoner as a subjob, since it provides that same refresh at level 25 as well, and a wider variety of useful buffs. As a rule, tho, the small refresh is not as useful as the spells/stat boots provided by the more standard mage subjobs (White Mage, Red Mage, Black Mage, depending on the main job being played.)

Development team wants us to experiment with new subjob combo, outside of the current sets we have. That much is true.

However, they have yet to put anything in that can replace "Provoke" for PLD, auto-refresh doesn't generate hate, refresh/ballad isn't the reason why monster would attack mage, to begin with, auto-refresh doesn't help much in exp-ing as Cuer mentioned.

SATA does help, but that alone isn't enough to hold hate, else many tank-job would have used a different sub long before this change. SATA only provide an amount of hate proportional to the damage they dealt, which is the same as BLM or anyone doing damage to the monster: for example, a SATA Dancing Edge did 1000 damage, follow by a 1000 damage MB by BLM, at this point, the tank and BLM have exactly the same hate.
