When I first started playing, the game worked fine most of the time, with maybe one crash a month or so. After the last few updates, the game will restart my computer a lot, sometimes it'll just crash as if you used "/shutdown", and now the game servers themselves are going down. (I can't get to POL at all at the moment.) The fact that only this one game is affected shows the problem is the game/server, but does anyone know or has anyone heard of any measures SE is taking to fix these problems?

There have definitely been problems with the servers in the last couple of days. The best place to check on this sort of thing is the Official FFXI News Site, which is regulary updated whenever they have any server problems. As for the problems you're having with the client, that sounds like an issue on your particular system or install of FFXI; you might want to talk to their technical support about that.

The game shutting down on you and the restarts are due to corrupted game files-- you need to reinstall FFXI. I guarantee if you do a file check in POL it will tell you the same thing. I've had this problem several times before if you couldn't tell. The only way to fix it is a reinstallation, unfortunately.

The problem is I just reinstalled the game with a fresh install and this happened right away after the update, so it seems like a fresh install isn't helping it much. I will also add that the occurances dropped dramatically with the Easter update, but they still occur sometimes.

What kind of file check is there? I haven't heard of this. Where do I get it?

As for the servers, I saw a message about a problem yesterday, but it has supposedly been fixed. There have been multiple mass kicks today now, I'm just like really frustrated by it.

IIRC the file check is on the very first screen when you open POL. It should say "Check Files" --just click it and the rest is automatic.
