How do Merit points work?

Sorry if this post has been posted before, but I would like to know how much HP per merit point is or however it works.

The info on this site has become woefully incomplete. There have been several additions to the merit point system since it was last update. Caps on how far you can raise stats have been raises, new stats can be increased such as combat and magic skills. The latest patch also added a whole new category of merit point usage for specific jobs. Sorry I don't have a website to refer you to with more complete info.
