I have a lvl 58 sam and was wondering what the technical differences were between how STRENGTH and ATTACK affect damage.
This is very important when deciding food and armor choices, so if anyone can provide me with accurate information from official game sources, I would greatly appreciate it. ^^

I recently posted a reply to someone who asked about the difference between vitality and defense. My friend said he read an interview somewhere with someone from SE.

http://ffxi.somepage.com/discussion/General/5439

So here is what we came up with.

Str - Increases the range of damage you can do to an enemy. Example: Someone with high str can potentially do 40-100 damage to an enemy. Someone with low str can potentially do 20-80 damage to the enemy.

Att - Determines where on the str-dmg spectrum more of your attacks will fall. Example: Someone with high attack will do 50-100 damage more often. Someone with low attack will do 0-50 damage more often.

Again this is hearsay/speculation if anyone can confirm/disprove with proof please do so.

The quick and dirty is this...

Strength increases your maximum damage.
Attack increases your minimum damage.
(random numbers used here to exagerate the difference)
With high strength and low attack, you could hit between 5 and 100. With high strength and high attack, you could hit 75-100.

With low strength and low attack, you could hit between 5 and 50. With high attack and low strength, you could hit between 45 and 50.

This is the very basics of it. More things come into play in determining the damage you do such as weapon damage, enemy defense and enemy vitality.

All ways of thinking about this is good; and this is how i usually think of Str and Vitaliy:

Str and Vitality determines Maximum amount of dmg can be dealt and decrease maximum amout of dmg that can be taken respectively.

While Attk and Def just affects the "average". So if you want you attack dmg to be more consistent then pump more attack; someone who has very high str and very low attack will do some very random dmg. I guess you can be tested by someone who has both sword and dagger cap at the same lv. And swap it and try. Asumming the dagger and sword are capped at same lv and their ONLY stats are Attack Power difference. You should noticed that with the dagger; you average damage is affected (more random); while with a sword you get more consistent damage. But the maximum damage that can be dealt shoudn't change much.

Anyone try it, you can tell me about it.

Another thing; Vitaliy increase Defense point and HP also. I think strength itself alos increase attack automatically; so when i play my PLD; i rather pump vitality than raw defense when i have the chance.

I hope that helps.

Friend of mine once explained STR and ATT to be ratio based. He related STR to being the cup and ATT being the water in the cup. You want the proper sized cup with the right amount of water for most effectiveness. Too much STR and your cup is too big loosing effectivness. Too much ATT and your cup will overflow again loosing effectivness.

The tricky part ofc is finding this balance. Each job requires different level of both and its pretty much up to you trail and error style to figure out whats your proper mix.

In most practical situations it is more useful to increase Attack than STR. People often speak of "capping out" your Attack and needing to increase STR, but to do this your Attack needs to be 2.4 times the mob's Defense. This is rarely achievable against Even Match mobs, much less an EXP mob 6-10 levels higher than you. So the analogy of "cup and water" is apt, but be advised that you start with a much, much larger cup than most people give credit for. The Attack/Defense function also forms the basis of all physical WS damage, not the "modifiers" that are thrown around constantly these days.
