BCNM Strategies

Since many BCNM's are catered to specific party settings, perhaps you could have a mini forumn for strategies and particularly effective party setups. And if you know how to beat BCNM 20 Waughroom Shrine (Crustacean Conundrum) for all that is watched by the goddess altana post a reply. Those 3 crabs are evil incarnate.

We aren't set up at this time to have different forums like that, although it's certainly something we're looking at for the future. If we do expand that way, having a forum that focuses on BCNMs is certainly a great idea.

One problem with trying to list certain ways to handle BCNM's is that there are many ways to handle each. BCNM 40 "Steamed Sprouts" is a very common BCNM for people to do (though less so now with the addition of so many new ones). The most common way people think of doing this BCNM is with a bard to sleep the minions with a healer watching the bard. The rest of the party attacks the main NM with a seperate healer watching them. Ideally for me this setup is rdm/blm (58/29 to escape after completion), rdm/whm, brd/whm, drk/war (tanks and can stun flood) and 2x rng/nin.
However, workable (and in same cases better) meathods include 6x bst. All of them run in each charms a different minion and they have at it. This is a rather easy way of doing it and a steady source of income for many Bst's on my server.
Another meathod is rdm/pld tank. You'd have rdm/pld run up diaga a minion with phalanx, stoneskin and icespikes up with full set of tank gear. The rest of the party are 4 DD (one being drk for stun) and another rdm/whm. With proper gear and the availability of merit points a rdm/pld can take close to 0 damage on most hits, self heal most of the damage they take and dish out cyclones on a steady basis. This is a very fast way of completing this BCNM but very risky.
Another meathod that comes to mind to try would be 6x rng/nin using crossbows and sleepbolts. Run up... everyone targets a different minion and sleep them all with sleep bolts (you'd have 1 more to sleep as well). Then proceed to hit the main NM a few times, everyone Barrages and skillchians (forget the marksmanship names but archery equivelents are piercing arrow >> burning arrow). NM would be dead shortly as it only has 4k hp and the rest of the mandragora would fall soon after.

about the original question concerning Crustacean Conundrum:
These crabs have about 25*minions) and 40 HP(boss).
---ANY--- atttack will only deal 1 damage.
Knowing these, you can easilly imagine a strategy.
2 MNKs + 1 Healer is a well known strategy for 2 MNKs on 2h will quickly deal the 40 DMG... (40 hits)
The power absolutly not necesary here... all you need is speed or extrem endurance... thf with dagger(or another job who can carry tadder) is also very good for this...

Crustacean Cunumdrum is actually fairly easy
my setup is Whm/Smn with a Yag drink have carby occupy one crab, nin/war, rng/smn again with carby keeping a crab occupied. pick one of the lesser crabs and poke it to death, and repeat with the other lesser crab and then to the big one
rng should have the fastest knife and throwing weapon possible as you can only hit the crabs for 1 dmg per hit
3nin/rng could work to

just a thought on the crab one:
After taking the two smaller crabs out by whatever method (make sure a thf/war is in the group), you can then have the thf/war kite around the main crab with strider boots. With extra movement speed, he should never get hit. Then you just have someone with a ranged weapon pick the mob off. I'd be suprised if constant 1 dmg attacks could pull hate off a thf/war.
(a rng/war could kite too, but they'd be more suited for damage I think)

Crustacean Cunumdrum can be easy done with
RDM/NIN, RDM/NIN, THF/WAR <> NIN/WAR
with fully Evasion Gear (Eva ~+20) this is an easy BCNM.
Without using any 2hour.
RDM/NIN dual Beestinger/Spark Dagger +1/Platoon Dagger
the ***/WAR uses Silence Dagger +1
and have some Enthunder or so up!
Boss has Waterga and any cure will make a lot of hate.
Strategy:
Paralyze is very good, cause every hit goes para is one hit less that could drain their full hp back!
RDM/NIN (+int gear) binds one of the small crabs
***/WAR takes the heavy with provoke and moves away (to other side)
both RDM/NIN take the unbount crab, should be done very fast! after that, they take the other crab.
tank shoulb be ok with 2-3 poitins, no healing at this point.
after both crabs are dead, it goes to the boss. can be a bit harder now, spaming Waterga. rdm can uns barwater and only one of them should be main-healer (taru best choice)
then the other can attack without interrupts.
we did this a few times, 100% win. about 5 minutes fighting.
but other bcnm bringing you more Gil per Seal, we were bored of waiting for static pt members ^^

Question: if the rdm's have an enspell active do they get 1 dmg from the normal attack and 1 from the enspell? I've often wondered if this was the case and if so I can easily see how rdm/nin could be one of the best ways of beating this (maybe even over having a monk).
