I just started my Mithra-Thief yesterday and I was curious if anyone had any advice. I started in San'Doria and I eventually would like to become a RNG/NIN with THF available for farming. Should I solo to 15 before going to ValkurM?

Thieves till 15 offer very little to a party. Your damage is nothing special and unless you sub warrior you can't do much in a party aside from pull and DD. That means if I were you (and I have been) I'd be prepared to solo to 15 or at the very least be willing to make the parties. These levels can be difficult and tedious but can also be a great time to make gil if you know where to fight (killing masses of things that drop fire crystals or such can be great gil especially to lower level players).

That being said I have some advice for you that will make you prepared to be a great thf later. Use archery while leveling your thf. It does good damage and though thieves don't have high skill at certain levels you can one shot things for 12-18xp raking in the xp and crystals and drops. Once you hit 15 start working on marksmanship. This will be expensive but very very worth it. Acid bolts will be your cheapest means of leveling marskmanship but also extremely valuable to your party because of the defense down effect. If I had to do it all over again the moment I could level marksmanship I'd try to find a higher level player to help my PL the skill (only the skill as in be partied with them). To hit with any regular basis once you are partying you'll probably want to use an equip macro to equip bone rings for your ranged attack and another macro for going back to melee gear.

Anyone willing to explain Thieving tools? Are the keys n such the equivalent of a Hatchet/Pickaxe, and Chests equivalent to logging point/ Mining point?

If you're asking if you just use the item on the chest like you'd use a pickaxe on a mining point then yes. However, your chance of success varies and a variety of results occur from failed picks of the chest. If you do fail the chest always disappears and you always lose the tool you use whether successful or not.

If you fail to pick a chest, there's a chance you also become Weakened for an extended period of time (it's been a while since this last happened to me, so I don't remember how long it was... maybe 15m? 30m?). During this weakness you cannot pick any other chests.

If you fail to pick a coffer, there's a chance it will turn into a Mimic. If you manage to defeat the Mimic, it drops a coffer key for you, though. ;-)

A thief friend of mine has had the weakness from a failed pick last for 5 minutes to 30 minutes.
