PlayOnline: Congestion During the Version Update

From:PlayOnline
Jul. 19, 2005 03:50 [PDT]

Congestion During the Version Update

Due to heavy server traffic upon the completion of maintenance at 2:00 (PDT), timeout or network errors may occur when you try to log into PlayOnline contents. Access to PlayOnline.com (http://www.playonline.com/) may also be affected.

If you are unable to access the version update, we ask that you please wait a while and then try again.

We apologize for the inconvenience.

I see this as a problem over and over again. For almost 2 years that i have been playing there has always been a prob with the updates. you would think that SE would change it and make it a DL off the web site.

Funny i was thinking the exact same thing, would be much faster and easier to download patches from there site or an ftp link rather than the horrible Play Online veiwer

I think so too.. there should be a downloadable patch for the game instead of this auto-update.. It's a pain since everytime it disconnects, you'll have to redownload the version's info again, and check ALL the files again just to disconnect another time after downloading 1 file.
its should be much faster and pratical with an http or ftp download.

I think at least a better server array would alleviate some of the congestion. It's 8am(PDT) and I still can't get past the file check on my ps2.

Perhaps part of the problem of why this hasn't been checked is that not enough people have issued complaints to SE about the issue.

Good luck to everyone still trying to connect.

SE needs to figure out a different way to do these updates, they seem to be very limited on bandwidth to handle a massive update such as this newest one.

Suggestion 1: Update each server independently. When its done move on to the next server.

Suggestion 2: For an extra fee (I would pay it if it were $50.00!!) Mail the user a CD.

Suggestion 3: Create an application that can be downloaded from affiliates and or mirror sites that will contain the updates so the traffic will be spread over different domains. Effectivly doing away with their apparent bandwidth shortage.

I have been downloading the update now for almost 5 hours over my 44kbps dialup connection that is set up with an 8 hour autodisconnect on my service providers end. As of this post the time remaining says unknown, I have downloaded a whopping total of 114 files from the total of 1151. 14% !!!! When my 8 hours are up I will be faced with the tedious task of trying to log into POL after which I will be lucky if my DC doesn't destroy what I have downloaded requiring me to start all over!

I might be able to play the game sometime around Thursday if I am lucky and camp my keyboard for the next 24 to 48 hours.

Hippo is very upset!!!

No. The simple solution is to have dedicated servers that are meant specifically for handling updates and have a nice new servers to do that. These updates are HUGE, and getting connected is the worse problem of FFXI at times like these.

Now, another thing they could do is have a queue, and a time limit for a player to click and start a download, WITHOUT being interrupted, if you are gone then you missed your chance and someone else who is ready can play first. (The people left before you should be shown to.)

This would prevent some people from camping it like a NM and simply come back at a later date and also allow people to think about their plan for the update, rather then just coming on at a random time and expect to get in.

I guess I'm not the only one having this problem...I cannot understand why a top notch company like SE will have such problems. They can't even handle 700,000 subscribers. With over 8 million USD every month, they cannot afford additional mirrors to update the patch? Jeez.
It's like putting up an announcement "Please, we need more people to quit FFXI"

ugh.... I am sure pol and SE are tired of getting my "This is not how you handle paying customers" emails. It seems all they ever do is find the quick fix. And I also think its ridiculous with the ammount of money they get from subscribers they cant provide more servers or venues for patch time. I guess most that money goes to the ever helpful GMs whom i sometime believe are reading scripted answers that were developed for the simple affect to look like they are doing something. Well anyway i have the game on both PC and PS2 so i have to visit Hell twice when updates come yet here I am 7 hrs after the maint and still cant even get to "preparing" stage on either platform. ( i gave up on the ps2 hours ago cause i wasnt sure if i broke something :/) Off to bed i go and God willing this will be settled and i can spend my night tonight(after i wake i sleep days lol) watching a download bar slowly tick by.

This patch has been very problematic in how it was rolled out, no doubt about it. We had major problems downloading it ourselves, of course, which is why we're behind in getting the compilation of info out.

Unfortunately, we can't do anything about it... and comments further won't really help. If you want to leave feedback, I suggest going to the FFXI Feedback Section and selecting the Email Support there.
