PlayOnline Server Maintenance (Jul. 18)

At the following time we will be conducting PlayOnline server maintenance. During this period, FINAL FANTASY XI and Tetra Master will be unavailable.

The Friend List Plus feature, accessible from the official PlayOnline homepage (www.playonline.com/) will be unavailable as well.

During those hours, we will also be conducting server maintenance for FINAL FANTASY XI in preparation for the upcoming version update.
Please refer to the Information section for more details.

One note on this: the server maintenance may provide the content patch at the same time. Some of the Japanese sites seem to be referring to it that way, and looking at the Babelfish auto-translated info points in that direction. We'll no doubt learn more specifics as we get closer to the end of this week.

That might make some sense considering this server maintenance event is also scheduled to be 16 hours long.

one thing i've noticed: long server down = short/small client download short downtime = long download. not saying this is steadfast, after all this is SE, home of "various other fixes"

in retrospec, its probly only going to be a small to medium update. although i am happy to see them offereing to prepatch the PC version ahead of time...

the massive downtime is for POL,
not ffxi (they are just going to sneak in some FFXI downtime)

from the translation:
"The inside permitting/inserting: Transfer of facilities and reinforcement of server equipment"

if theyr phsyically moving the servers, the long update, is to make sure the DNS entry's update accross the world. that would make perfect sence...

- My Friend List will be updated so that users will be able to set different personal comments for each handle.

- The PlayOnline Viewer message list will be updated so that users will be able to reply to messages in their "Read Messages" list.

- A display showing the number of members participating in a group chat will be added.

- A Friend List function that allows users to send messages simultaneously to multiple friends will be added.

- A "Q&A Search" shortcut will be added to the Active Handle Information screen.

- The handle name and portrait currently being used will now be displayed in the Active Handle Information screen.

- The maximum number of attachments to one PlayOnline mail will be increased to 10 files.

We have also undertaken other operations not necessarily detailed in this news item.

So, on the 18th-19th FFXI is getting:

1) Server upgrades.
2) A POL update (with unspecified anti-hacking measures, if I read that correctly.)
3) The major content patch.

I guess it's good they gave themselves plenty of time to do it all, as they'll certainly need it! I don't recall them ever pushing this much in one downtime, but then they've only done 2-3 major server upgrades since the initial North American release. I know we're going to have a very late night here; hopefully the actual patch will be in by midnight PDT, like they're scheduling it to. Should be fun!
