Adventure together, defeat fearsome monsters together, and gain experience together! That's right--your NPC friend can also gain experience and level up alongside you! After you've fought a few battles together, your ally might show up wearing new gear the next time you call for it! This new feature will open up the excitement of Vana'diel like never before!

The next version update coming in mid-July is full of new adventures and features designed to maximize your enjoyment in Vana'diel. Keep your eyes peeled for more information!

It could definitely be a big change. This is one of those "devils in the details" type of additions; some other things that they've hyped have turned out not to be that big of a change, so I guess it remains to be seen. If this is an NPC that can do more than just melee, however, it will open up solo possibilities rather dramatically. Even as a very basic melee helper, it would let characters do a little on their own. Presumably this is why there is going to be the experience tweak to lower level mobs, as well; so that players can go out with their NPC buddy and slowly gain xp by "soloing".

It should make for an interesting patch, at least!

Think about it, It wont be much different then a Dragoon with his pet friend. Tho my Drg in only lvl 13, when I solo I'm sure glad he's there with that last hit for the kill when my HP is low. :)

It looks like it could be at least fun, it would certanly help when out farming. It would be nice if the NPC had some spells, that would open up all kinds of possibilities.

I was in Dangruf Wadi (Asura) on a quest last night when i saw this NPC called Ken who was following a PC called Bdash. When i asked Bdash was Ken his, he replied that he could not speak English. All I could do ask was >>Bdash: <What?> <Quest> ---> Ken? But he did not reply. I wonder if this quest has already been released, or maybe in a Japanese update???

That NPC is part of All By Myself, a low level Bastok escort quest.

Oh I see, thank you very much for clearing that up, I thought the Friend Quest had already begun. Sorry for the false alarm.

This seems interesting. But I can only imagine the chore it might seem too. "Level your NPC, noob." People have enough trouble with subjobs for godsakes.

I wonder what the quest will entail. Or what it will require? And yet more "Devil's in the Details" things, what of the item? Is it a one-shot, enchanted, or unlimited thing? What level is the buddy?

Many questions, but nobody will know until the big update.

I guess this quest is going to be reasonably hard because otherwise if every player satisfied the requirements for it there would almost certainly be a doubling in that particular server's population. The other purpose for making it hard would be that noobs got some party experience before they could go off and do there own thing? Does anyone else think that this may be a quest similar to extra job quests?

Effortless Title Selection and More!

The next version update will introduce a new fortune-telling NPC and changes to the character title selection system!

Simpler Title Selection and a New NPC Fortuneteller!

The next version update will introduce changes to the character title selection system and reveal a new NPC fortuneteller.

New Character Title Selection System
-Currently, when using the services of an NPC bard to change your title, you must pay gil to receive a list of earned titles that you can select from. However, in the next version update, you may see your list of titles without paying. It will still cost gil to change your title, but the price will be lowered.

-After altering your character's title, the surrounding adventurers will be notified by a /say message announcing the change.

-Players will now have the option to have one of their titles selected randomly for free once each day (Earth time).

New NPC Fortuneteller
-A new NPC will tell the player's fortune regarding character titles and other "elements."

Keep checking this site for the newest information regarding the version update in mid-July!

What do you guys think will be the answer to these questions:

1. Will the NPC lower the amount of EXP you gain, just like if it was a real person?
2. Will the NPC use Job abilities availabe to the job?
3. Will the NPC use weapon skills?
4. If the latter question's answer is yes, will you be able to choosethe WS it does?
5. Will it use current player tactics (SATA, JA+WS etc.)?
6. Will you be able you choose the NPC's job or does it just randomly generate it?
7. When you call the NPC will it appear as a member of your party or will it be shown like a pet or will it be neither?
8. To call an NPC will you have to go to a separate NPC and "order" one or will it be like the DRG's call wyvern?
9. Will the NPC stay with you until it gets killed or can it be raised?
10. Will the NPC stay with you for a set amount of time or will it only go away if it is dismissed?

This sounds pretty interesting. I'm sure the quest will be probably quite annoying/hard, in a ridiculous way no doubt (maybe, hopefully not) I hope the NPC starts off in your level, like if I'm a lev 25 blm, he/she's a lev 25 whatever, that would be nice, and being able to pick the job you want them to do, like I'm a BLM, so I'd make him a WAR to keep monsters off me, then maybe later make him a PLD (if I did the PLD quest, and let's hope the AI is smart haha, or you can at least command him/her like you'd do a pet.) I also hope you can name him/her. I was hoping they'd do something like this eversince I started playing the game back in 03 (my other character's a 75 NIN), I play the game, with my older brother, and my 2 best friends, and when we're all on it would be cool if all of us had an NPC, and could play alone together, on top of that standing around waiting for hours (happened a few times) to get into a party is so not even fun at all, so if me and my NPC could fight lower lev monsters to get decent exp while I wait to get invited, would be hot.
