FINAL FANTASY XI Update (Jul. 7)

At the following time, we performed a FINAL FANTASY XI (Windows version) update as further measures along with those of July 5 against third-party software. Also, our development team is currently working on further solutions for mid-July to disable the usage of such third-party software.

*The client software was updated at this time. The client update will begin once you connect to FINAL FANTASY XI. Please follow the instructions that appear on your screen.

I don't know if they keep making changes to specifically target archbell's windower or not but it sure seems like they are. I can understand that the windower is against the ToS/EULA but for what it does it seems rather benign to the overal play of the game, not hurting the play of other people or at the very least not to the extent that other infringments of the EULA do.

It would not be hard for SE to find out which people delete darter files so they can pull fafnir/nidhog. It's fairly well known which people on my server are gil sellers and I'm sure that's the case on many other servers. In my opinion both of these violations of the ToS are far more damaging to game play than someone using a windower (though this new one takes an additional step towards being more of a hack) yet SE would rather spend there time stopping archbell than IGE.

To the best of my knowledge, Square-Enix is not and has not broadly targetted either windowers or gil selling. They don't care about either one enough to do so, although both are technically against the TOS and individual players can get in trouble for them, if they raise a ruckus.

What these patches the last few days have been targetting, and what the patch notes referred to, are the gameplay hacks that have been publicized recently. Things like speed hacks, being able to ignore the physics of the game world, etc. Those are the sort of thing that S-E should be paying attention to, IMO, and that should never have been allowed to exist in the first place.

The number one rule when making a client/server type of game like this is: never trust the client. That rule was apparently lost when S-E first developed FFXI for the PS2, even though they had to know it would be ported to the PC eventually. So, people can do things with the client that should never be possible, such as removing graphics files to not see certain mobs. S-E is now trying to play a catch-up game to keep major gameplay hacks out of the game, because the client wasn't designed properly to begin with.

Any work that deals with these issues can spread over into breaking things like the windower, but it seems highly unlikely that they are directly targetting it. Of course, if they really wanted to take care of these issues, they would rewrite the client interface and provide a windower built-in, but that doesn't seem likely anytime soon.

Unfortunately, this update has broken a program I have come to rely on, it's called Synergy. it allows me to use 1 keyboard and 1 mouse across multiple computers. Now every time I switch out, it's crippled. I RELY on this system to use my computers, this IS my keyboard and mouse, and now it's broken. It's not impossible, but it's next to, when it comes to trying to play. If I wasnt trying to exp it wouldnt be so bad, but how can I possibly play now? This isnt a patch, it's a hack as stated earlier. not only that, but it is an ugly hack, as it makes no discretion between a good app and bad one. I dont run windower, I dont need to, I have multiple computers. but essentially SE has crippled my ability to use them in conjunction, which I find sad. Hopefully they fix this, if they read this, they may find a difference. I would have thought it more logical to compare the current window size to screen size, and cripple that way, but that extra step was not implemented, and it cripples without discretion. Until I am able to play, SE wont be getting any more of my money.
