You are correct; DPS is the base Damage Per Second done by the weapon. It's a very simple calculation, looking at only the damage vs delay of the weapon -- none of the effects are calculated in. But if you keep that in mind it's handy when comparing different weapons around the same level, and figuring out when to upgrade.

I think the usage of this DPS rating is downplayed because higher delay yeilds more tp. Often times adding 5 delay to a weapon could mean 1 less attack needed to reach 100% tp. TP store and Barrage also makes higher delay less of a hindrence to damage over time. I guess this is more a rambling note to players looking at weapons as anything else.

Not only that, but the DMG rating of a weapon represents both the amount of damage it will do and its ability to ignore the enemy's Defense when striking. For this reason, the "DPS" stat is relatively meaningless--weapon choice should be based almost entirely on DMG.

I would disagree slightly about Damage always being the only important variable. Sometimes you want a faster weapon that does the same or better DPS, even if the listed damage isn't quite as high. This is especially true for tank jobs who would rather hit more often than try to hit hard, since they're not going to do a ton of damage regardless. Anyone for whom Accuracy is a concern might choose weapons that way, as well, since swinging more often is a higher priority when there's a good chance that a significant percentage of those swings will miss.

Of course, this is all a moot point at higher character levels, where it's often 5+ levels before a meaningful weapon upgrade is available; the choices there are fairly obvious. At lower levels where there are more options, however, I think DPS is a useful if simplistic way to help sort through the weapons available.

I think that if a damage dealer is having accuracy issues, changing to a lower damage lower delay weapon really isnt the solution, buying better dex and acc gear or agi and r.acc gear for rngs is a better solution. But there is a little weight to the system when you have 2 weapons with the same dmg but one has less delay. Buuut thats kind of obvious for which weapon should be used.
