What is DPS?

While checking out weapons on this site, I noticed that there was a column called DPS that had a value for each weapon. So what is DPS? Damage per swing? If so, how did you arrive at that value?
Also I wanted to thank you guys for running this site. I prefer it to both mysterytour and allakhazam.com.

DPS is indeed Damage Per Second, arrived at with a very simple formula based on the listed Damage of the weapon. (The numbers listed there will be changing shortly, since the formula used so far has been incorrect.) It's mainly useful for rough comparisons of one weapon to another; all other things being equal, the weapon with the highest DPS will do the most damage over time.
It should be pointed out that a higher listed Damage weapon can be more useful in some circumstances, even if it's technically less DPS. For example, mobs that are resistant to physical damage, such as Crabs, can be cut through faster with a higher Damage weapon because of the way the damage is reduced. Also, the DPS calculation doesn't take into account any Effects on the weapons. But as a very generic comparison, it can be handy.
