Is This Normal?

I'm leveling Goldsmithing and I've been stuck at 51 for the last few weeks. Today I made 7 Gold Ingots(Gold Ore + Gold Nuggetx6) I broke twice... so that makes 9 synths and got the grand total of .1 out of the lot... whats up? Is that normal for the higher levels or am I just as unlucky in synths as I am in everything else?

I have 60 in all crafts except gold (51 in gold). After leveling these crafts, I've learned to count on combines:skill about as follows:

12:1.0 for skill < 50
48:1.0 for 50 < skill < 60
??:1.0 for 60 < skill < 100 (I'd assume at *least* 48:1)

The numbers for under 50 are regardless of day, direction, or phase of moon; ie. skillups come so often it doesn't really matter when you do them. The numbers for 51-60 assume full moon, maximum gain day, and maximum gain direction -- and even weather when you can manage it.

IMHO, environmental effects are weighted in this order: moon > weather > day > direction. It's usually too tedious to bother with weather, but if you need it, traveling to the right zone for proper weather can pay off very nicely. OTH, if you wait for the weather, you might loose the moon and day; it's not worth trading the moon for the sky.

Cost-wise, the only crafts that are incredibly important to plan in advance are gold, cloth, and smith. They're all time-consuming, though. So, after learning how painful 51+ skillups can be, I began planning all my skill sessions in advance. I'd buy enough materiel and stockpile it for the right moon/day. Crafting this way uses a lot of mule space to stockpile product. Selling skillups needs a fair bit of patience to move your product off your mules slowly enough not to crash the market and to weather the occasional dump from impatient crafters skilling up on the same items.

If you're a die-hard crafter, you can just vendor all your skillup junk and move directly to making your target profit items. It is much more profitable to burn gil to reach your profit-making goal and then produce only high profit items than it is to sell off your skillups. However, you actually have to do all that extra profit-crafting. I'm too lazy for that. As long as my mules have junk to sell, I feel no particular need to create more. ^~
