Good point!

There a LOADS of timers/face-that-direction-guidelines covering the aspect of success, but hardly any information available about how to get HQs.

I hear facing the direction that is strong over the
crystal helps.
But that is more like a commonly-agreed-upon-rumor that anything proven with data, so it could as well be myth.

Concerning days & the effects on HQ, I'm dying to hear your theories!

My best overall HQ results for Wind are:
Preferred day: Windsday (Best), Light (Success/HQ) or Dark (Skillup/HQ), or Earth
Preferred direction: East for Tier 0/1, Southeast for Tier 2/3

it follows what the previous reply describes: Facing the element direction which is the strong opposing element is rumored to be (and I have come to agree) the best boost you can give to HQ apart from waiting for a particular moon phase or day.

unfortunately I cannot find a chart that explains the elemental balance. here is what i know, correct me if i'm wrong:
Fire is strong opposition to water, and weak opposition to ice.
Wind is strong opposition to ice, and weak opposition to earth.
Lightning is strong opposition to earth, and weak opposition to water.
Water is strong opposition to fire, and weak opposition to Lightning.
Earth is strong opposition to lightning, and weak opposition to wind.
Ice is strong opposition to wind, and weak opposition to fire.
Light and Dark oppose each other and seem neutral to the other elements, however some people think that the Light and Dark elemental balance is similar to that of Lv3 skillchains: Light is Thunder, Fire, Wind, Light & Dark is Dark, Ice, Earth, and Water.

To calculate your precise odds, use the FFXI Crafting Timer @ ffxi.lokyst.net/timer/crafttimer.html - This tool was invaluable to me in raising craft skills beyond Lv60. It can be a great help in order to plan a schedule so that you get either maximum skill boost or the best skill up odds.

Furthermore, supposedly the facing the Strong direction is HQ/Skillup and the Weak direction is Success, but I have come to disagree with that rumor. That rumor is only true if you are within a particular level range. By using the crafting compass I have been able to get maximum amount of skill from the cheapest possible recipes, occasionally several skill-ups in a row even after lv60.

The way I remember the directions is this.

West is water. Once I remeber this, the direction 45 degrees counterclockwise is the one that water is weak to, thunder, and 45 degrees farther is the one thunder is weak to, earth, and so on. Then all you have to remember is that North is dark, and Northeast is light. ^^

Hope that makes -some- sense.

Oh, and I've noticed a differance to the point that I dont do synths except on the day and direction strong to the crystal (ie Thundersday and Southwest for water) but I believe in other 'juju' and I am seriously considering looking into other theories I have... thought up? on my own. >.> ;;

Well, that is kinda confusing if you ask me... actually it's

North: Light
(Dark Crystal Weakness)
North-East: Dark
(Light Crystal Weakness)
East: Ice
(Wind Crystal Weakness)
South-East: Wind
(Earth Crystal Weakness)
South: Earth
(Thunder Crystal Weakness)
South-West: Thunder
(Water Crystal Weakness)
West: Water
(Fire Crystal Weakness)
North-West: Fire
(Ice Crystal Weakness)

Generally, I have heard a consenus on the following for HQ:

1. Synth on Darksday, or the day of the weak Strongest to your crystal.

2. Face the direction Strongest to your crystal (-1)

3. Synth on a New Moon. Obviously, 0% is best. (-1.5)

4. Get Guild Support (Advanced) (+3)

5. Use Guild Items obtained by guild points (+1 each)

accepted Tiers (I Think)

10 Lvl above cap 10%
30 Lvl above Cap 20%
50 Lvl Above Cap 50%

I use the following to figure out where I am:

X = {CAP+(Day+Moon)}-{Level+(Synth Support+Guild Items)

X will be a negative value. So -10 is tier 1 and so on...

Skill Ups I use:

X = Cap - {lvl + (Day + Moon + Synth Support+ Guild Items)

You want the range to be as close to 3 as possible. 2-4 are your best skill ups w/ sucess.

IF Cap - LVL = 5 then breaks can result in skill ups. Notice, all factors are removed. You must balance them to gross a 0 modifier in order to to break synth skill ups when there is only one craft involved.

An Easier method is to fid a synth with 2 crafts and be sure one is FAR above your level. However, I wouldn't be surprised if keeping both in the 5 range yeilded better results over all.
