103 crafting skill cap?

The Panther Mask is listed as 103 leather. What does that mean? I thought that the skill levels were the skill cap for that item.

You are correct, the skill levels listed are the cap for the recipe. A few very high end recipes have skill caps over 100, making them difficult to consistently synthesize. Of course, with all the Guild Point items that provide crafting skill raises, players can get over 100 skill as well.

How do we know this? Is it deduced from the fail/success rate? Or can we read it from the .dat files or something?

Might be time for me to get the Hocho and the Cordon Bleu Set to get that last little bit of cooking skill.

The level cap of a recipe can be figured out by the Guild Craftsman who gives it out. There are recipes that are still given out by the higher skill craftsman at 100, which makes their skill cap over 100. This can also be seen at what level the recipe can be attempted, as well, since you can't attempt to synth a recipe more than 15 points below it's cap. People with a lot of time and gil on their hands have narrowed down the skill caps for many recipes that way.
