Can someone explain skill caps?

I don't mean to sound dumb or anything... I am a newb to the game and I only just reached lvl 12. I'm trying crafting out, particularly blacksmithing.

I decided to print off some recipes and try them out. Here is one such recipe.

Bronze Zaghal
Black Smith (6-10)
Carpenter (6-10)
Bronze Ingot x2
Grass Cloth x1
Ash Lumber x1

I only am lvl 2 in smithing. However, I tried smithing regardless of the fact it says (6-10) next to blacksmith, and the recipe came out fine.I've done it 3 times so far, no problems. So I don't understand what skill caps are. Are they just guidlines? or is there some reason why I was still able to make this. If something says Black Smith (30-40) could I possibly make that as well?

The level cap of an item determines the level at which you will no longer get "skill ups" to raise your crafting level, hence skill cap. In crafting you want to be within 1-5 levels below the cap to get max skill up points. Anything beyond and too many breaks will occur costing you more gill than necessary to level your craft. Synthesis supports will also help in leveling your craft. There are a lot of guides out there, ffxiclopedia, allakahzam, etc
