I was trying to gather as much information on your NPC from the fellowship quest as possible. Please post here with any other information relating to abilities/upgrades you NPC gets over time, this is what I have heard so far:
1. NPC gains aprox. 70% normal exp
-unknown if he/she can chain exp
2. The more often you summon your NPC the longer he/she will stay each time
3. It is possible to summon NPC more than once per day by dropping pearl then getting another from rondezvous point, however since the update when you do this your NPC will like you less (unknown exactly what that means)
4. The more you call your NPC the more options you get when you talk to him/her at the rondezvous point, specifically: after 3 times you can change his/her job between healer, sheild style, or attacker. Also after ? number of times you can ask him/her to change headgear.
5. Eventually you can talk to Luto and trade low level weapons to her for your NPC to use. Unknown if this is related to # of times NPC is called or to NPC leveling up.
6. There is a second stage to trading weapons where eventually you can trade slightly higher level weapons.

That is all I know/heard so far please post with any additional information you may have found out.

For #3, It means it will, effectively, cause the number of times you have summoned your NPC to go down. For example if you have summoned your npc enough times to switch jobs, then drop the pearl, you won't be able to switch jobs untill you summon it some more. (I'm not sure how many summons a drop causes you to lose.)

For #5, it is summon related. I can trade the first set and still haven't leveled any.

Level caps
Currently available level cap for your NPC is 60. There are 2 level cap quests:
51-55 - Diederik (Selbina)
56-60 - Luto Mewrilah (Upper Jeuno)

Picture Perfect (raising your level cap to 55)
Summary: Diederik has lost a painting ordered by a valued customer. He wants you to help him earn time or get a new painting before anyone notices.

You have get your NPC up to about 60% experience in level 50 for him to give you the quest. You DON'T have to complete Promyvion quest, you have to complete "A Pose By Any Other Name" (Angelica, Windurst Waters, 2nd Floor of Rarab's Tail)

1. Talk to Diederik in Selbina (near the shore, not far away from the subjob NPC)
2. Choose to either go to Bastok (Umberto) or to Windurst (Angelica) - you NPC will always take another city.
a) Bastok Markets - Umberto (left of the Harmodios's Music)
b) Windurst Waters - Angelica (2nd Floor of Rarab's Tail)

3. After talking to Umberto - grab a "Pickaxe" (Boytz in Bastok Mines sells them) and go to Korroloka Tunnel and find an "Excavation Point". Use your Pickaxe to dig up the "Bal Shell". Give it to Umberto.

4. Go back to Selbina and talk to Diederik.

5. Go to Castle Oztroja, through Brass Door @ I-8 (levers) go up to I-9 and head east to courtyard. Proceed east until you get to Brass Door (I-8). Click it for CS, click it again to enter. Examine ??? to fight Yagudo Muralist (~50-52lvl, BLM type). Defeat it and talk to your NPC. Examine ??? again to get a key item (Opalescent Stone).

6. Go to Angelica (Windurst Waters) and talk to her

7. Go back to Umberto (Bastok Markets) and talk to him

Your NPC is now able to reach lvl55, congratulations!

Regaining Trust (raising your level cap to 60)
Summary: Your adventuring fellow is in the hospital after being attacked by a monster in Qufim. You should go make sure your friend is not too badly hurt.

Look below!

Luto's Quests

Past Reflections
Summary: Luto wants you to search the Optistery library in Windurst for a book that can help her repair the broken mirror.

You can start it at any level of NPC.

1. Talk to Luto Mewrilah (Upper Jeuno, G-8)
2. Go to Tosuka-Porika in Windurst Opistery (Windurst Waters, G-8) and talk to him
4. Gather all items:
- Bison Steak,
- San d'Orian Tea,
- Icecap Rolanberry,
- White Bread,
- Whitefish Stew,
- Windurst Salad.
And trade them to Tosuka Porika.

5. Go back to Upper Jeuno and talk to Luto Mewrilah again.

6. Go to Port Jeuno and talk to Khumo Daramasteh near the Kazham airship entrance (J-8).

Congratulations - quest complete. Your bonds with your NPC strengthen (not sure yet what it means though)

Blighted Gloom
Summary: Luto has asked you to locate a special metal that can be used to repair the broken mirror. According to her research, this substance can only be found inside an extremely rare species of slime.
Prerequisities: Enough NPC relationship & Past Reflections completed

1. Talk to Luto after you have enough NPC relationship (possible when there's a new option for headgear)
2. Luto will send you to 1 of 3 possible destinations:
- Ordelle's Caves
- Ranguemont Pass
- Korroloka Tunnel

Ordelle's Caves
Zone into Ordelle's caves from F-7 entrance in La Theine Plateau. Head south to the Path that ends at G-4 on the first map. Then head to I-5 on the 2nd map to find a ??? point.

Korroloka Tunnel
??? found at F-9/10 on the second map - this is the map that contains the tunnel full of Bogy mobs that leads to the NIN quest leeches.

Ranguemont Pass
The ??? is located at (I-9) on top of a small rock.

3. Click it to spawn the slime NM. Your NPC will appear to fight with you just like in the first limit quest. Very easy fight. NPC hit it for 71 damage when it spawned and that took away 9% of its health, so only has around 750-850 HP. Can be killed with 1 tier IV spell

4. Talk to your npc, then check the ??? point again to receive the key item "Vitrallum".

5. Return to Upper Jeuno for a cutscene with Luto.

6. Head to King Ranperre's Tomb and zone out into Jugner Forest. Head east for a little bit until you find a ???. Click it for a cutscene.
Congratulations! Bonds between you and your NPC strengthen! After that - you can choose another headgear for your NPC at Rendezvous Point.

Regaining Trust
Summary: Your adventuring fellow is in the hospital after being attacked by a monster in Qufim. You should go make sure your friend is not too badly hurt.

Prerequisities: Enough NPC relationship & Blighted Gloom completed

1. Talk to Luto after you have enough NPC affinity

2. Talk to Monberaux (Upper Jeuno, Infirmary, G-10)

3. Talk to Luto

4. Examine "Giant Footprint" in Qufim Island (E-6)

5. Kill NM gigas Ingaevon - pretty easy one, about lv.53-55, 3000 HP

6. Talk to your NPC

7. Talk to Luto

8. Talk to Monberaux

Congratulations! Your NPC level limit is now 60!
Title gained: Worthy of Trust

Chameleon Capers
Summary: A friend of Luto has used a magical costume kit to change into a child, but now he can't return to his original form. Luto wants you to help find a way to change him back.

Prerequisities: Regaining Trust completed + enough NPC affinity

1. Talk to Luto Mewrilah (Upper Jeuno, G-8)

2. Head to Ru'Lude Gardens and talk to Muhoho (H-7, Taru chick in Iron Musketeer's on the upper balcony of the palace)

3. Head to Bastok Mines and talk to Gelzerio (H-7, Galka at the counter of Boytz' Knickknacks store) for a cutscene

4. Head to Windurst Waters and talk to Chamama (F-10, at the Rarab Tail Hostelry) and you'll receive the key item Dust of Reversion

5. Go back to Jeuno and talk to Luto for yet another cutscene

6. Go to Delkfutt's Tower, and inspect a ??? at J-9 of the first floor for a cutscene. Check another ??? at I-5 for another cutscene. Head back to the first ??? and check it again, which will spawn a pot NM "Illusory Pot".

NM is VERY easy... NPC does 140-170 a hit to it at level 58. Total NM's HP is ~1800.

7. Once the pot is defeated, speak to your NPC, then inspect the ??? once more.

8. After a cutscene you are given the choice of three Tactics Manuals:
*** Tactics Manual of Endurance (new healing technique - Soothing Healer)
*** Tactics Manual of Fortitude (new tanking technique - Stalwart Shield)
*** Tactics Manual of Might (new fighting technique - Fierce Attacker)

The Tactics Manuals are actually Rare items which CAN be Bazaar'd and traded.

To use the manual, just talk to your NPC at the Rendezvouz Point with it in your inventory. When you talk at the Rendezvous Point again, the new job is available to select from the job style menu.

When your NPC learns the new job, YOU DO NOT LOSE THE MANUAL. Therefore find other people with different manuals, trade, and unlock all three new jobs!

Also, at the same time my NPC has a 4th headgear choice (checked before completing quest)

Promyvion quest
Prerequsities: Past Reflections & enough NPC relationship

1. Summon your NPC at Rendezvous Point and use "Let's talk about quests" option until you get a message about Emptiness.

2. Go to any Promyvion and click on Rendezvous Point at the start of Promyvion to summon your NPC.

3. You have 45 minutes with your NPC (you don't have to call him with your Signal Pearl) to find "???".

4. When you kill mobs in Promyvion your NPC will gather experience. The experience Formula is:

EXP gained after completing quest = Floor EXP + n*40
n - number of mobs killed).
Floor EXP:
- floor 1 - 300
- floor 2 - 500
- floor 3 - 750
- floor 4 - 1000

For example:
If you kill one mob on floor one, and click on ???, your NPC will gain 340 experience points.

If you kill 10 mobs and click on ??? on floor 3 your NPC will gain:

Exp = 750 + (10 * 40) = 1150 experience points

4. When you find it - click it. Your NPC will get experience and you will have to option to warp back to entrance.

5. Go back to any city Rendezvous Point and call your NPC

6. Get a new item - Tactics Pearl which will allow you to summon your NPC every 10 minutes! It only has 4 charges though...

Tactics Pearl
Description: A magical pearl that allows you to send a code to your adventuring fellow. Unlike a linkpearl, it is worn on the ear.
Level: 5 Rare/Ex
Enchantment: Signal
<Max Charges: 4 / Equip Delay: 30s / Reuse Timer: 10m>

After you use it you can call out your NPC in the same way as you use Signal Pearl. Your NPC stays the same amount of time and you can kill the same amount of mobs (20) in one session.

You can get a Tactics Pearl once a week (resets after Tally) - you must drop the pearl before you can get the new one. Then you have to repeat the Promyvion quest. Dropping your Tactical Pearl doesn't worsen your NPC affinity.

NPC Affinity
All the NPC quests and options are probably related to the amount of affinity you have with your NPC. i.e. there are probably 4 conditions to recieving quests, not all applicable at once.

1) your current level of NPC affinity (fighting monsters(or # of calls maybe) and doing quests with them should increase affinity - whether death decreases this iunno)
2) prerequisite quests completed (weapon upgrades probably included)
3) your NPC's level
4) your NPC's weapon level

I.e. For weapon upgrades, your NPC's actual level doesn't seem to matter much, but the other three conditions do. For Limit I, probably all four matter. The Promyvion escort probably requires a certain amount of affinity too.

Dropping your Signal Pearl is known to greatly decrease your NPC affinity, i.e. if you think like I do, it is a dropkick in the wrong direction if you intend to unlock any quests.

In other words, don't drop your Signal Pearl if you want anything new with your NPC.

NPC Armor

Your NPC's armor changes depending on where you level, or more specifically, which country controls where you choose to level. When you level your NPC for a certain amount of times in the same area - your NPC will get higher level of armor:

Sandoria:
Level 1: Scale Armor
Level 2: Plate Armor
Level 3: Mithril Armor
Level 4: Eisen Armor
Level 5: Carapace Armor
Level 6: Iron Musketeer set(Not sandorian chainmail? Possibly a typo)

Bastok:
Level 1: Lizard Armor
Level 2: Chainmail
Level 3: Centurion set
Level 4: Kenpogi set
Level 5: Shade Equipment
Level 6: Royal Squire Armor (Not Iron Musketeer? See above)

Windurst:
Level 1: Doublet set
Level 2: Trader's set
Level 3: Seer's set
Level 4: Gambison
Level 5: Wool
Level 6: Holy Breastplate (unsure about gauntlet, feet etc)

Beastmen (Level of ranks is uncertain):
Level 1 RSE
Chocobo riding gear
Bronze set (harness etc)
Level 30ish RSE
Blue Cotehardie
Scorpion Harness set (corrected)
Subligar

60%-80% into level: "Well well. It appears my next level is not far off at all."
80%-99% into level: "Any time now. My next level is very close indeed."
