What are they and how do you know how many you have?
Thanks in advance.

well first off, Normally when you open your Side menu, and open up 'Status', youll be givin 5 choices: "profile", "Job Levels", "Combat skills", "magic skills", and "Craft skills". Once a job reaches level 75, you are eligable for 'Merit points', but first you must talk to the moogle Next to Maat, in Ru`Lude Gardens(jeuno).
Now you can do merit points. if you open your side menu now, and open 'Status', their will be a 6'th option called 'Merit points'. When you select this option, 2 options will become available: 'Catagories", and "Mode Switch". Also to the Left of your screen, where it shows your Job/subjob currently being used, and your stats(str, dex..ect), down below where it would show your EXP to your Next level, it will have this.
0/10,000 (their called Limit points)
0/10 (Their called Merit Points)
"0/10,000", is the chart to show you how long before your next merit point. You have 0 Limit points, but you need 10,000.
How do you gain them?...well, first you select the "mode switch" tab, and youll be offered to change to EXP, or Merit Points. First select Merit points. Now whenever you kill a monster, the exp will be directly translated into Limit points. So if you killed a mob that would give you 100 exp, then you would get 100 limit points.(you must be in your mog house for you to switch between modes)
Now, Everytime your Limit Point's reach 10,000 it resets back to 0/10,000, but the "0/10" Merit Point's, that was below it, that i mentioned before will now look like "1/10".
So now, everytime you gain 10,000 limit points, You will gain 1 Merit point. maximum merit points is 10 at one givin time.
Now that Ive explained that, ill explain the "Catagories" tab. When you click on it, youll be giving about 20 more catagories. From top to Buttom(from what i can remember), the Catagories are..
Hp & MP
Attributes
Combat Skills
Magic Skills
Others
Warrior
Monk
Whitemage
Redmage
Blackmage
Thief
Paladin
Darkknight
Beastmaster
Bard
Ranger
Samuria
Ninja
Dragoon
Summoner
Now im not going to list them all, but under the "Hp & MP" catagorie, youll see...
Max HP 0 Next 1 pt
Max MP 0 Next 1 pt
When you highlight one of these option, the Top Explantion bar will say something like this.. "Adjust your Maximum Hp by 10 points" or "Adjust your Maximum MP by 10 points".
So now lets say you put 1 point into MP. Now no matter what job you are on or what level, youll have 10 mp(even if its a job that doesnt use mp). But once you do that your Merit points will decrease by 1, as tho you spent 1 that you had. (from the previous 10/10, youd now have 9/10).
Now that Catagorie will look like this.
Max HP 0 Next 1 pt
Max MP 1 Next 2 pt
So now if you want to up MP again, youll hafta spent 2 points this time, and after that, 3 points. Now your Probably wondering how this keeps people from having over 1 billion HP or MP? Well the truth is, Each of the Catagories as a maximum limit of points you can put into it. For example, you can only put a total of 8 points into 'HP & MP"(so you can either have 8 into one, and 0 in the other, or 4 into both...or anyway you like, as long as the total combo doesnt exceed 8). You can also Delete merit points in this catagoeis if you feel you made a mistake, or would like to try it a different way, unforantly your NOT compansated for the loss.
Each Catagorie has a different Maximum of total combined points you can stick into it.
For another Example, the Attributes Catagorie would look like this...
STR 0 Next 3 pt
DEX 0 Next 3 pt
VIT 0 Next 3 pt
AGI 0 Next 3 pt
INT 0 Next 3 pt
MND 0 Next 3 pt
CHR 0 Next 3 pt
max Total combined points for this Catagorie is 5.
now im not sure how much more their is to explain, i hope you got the general idea now.

For the number of merit points per Catagory.
Actually this is not entirely true.
HP/MP are still 8
Base are still 5
BUT
Weapons go to 12
Magic to 8
Other to 8
ALL jobs go to 10 (compared to 5 before update)
This gives a lot more power to mages and melee. They have to put more exp into filling out those merits!
------
The patch upgraded alot of the lower limits on merits. Supposively some of these have a cap, while others don't. (Before reaching max combined merits in any catagory). Only time will tell how far it can go! :)

For the Blackmage merits the cap is 5.
I have Thunder lvl 5 and it is capped. None of the other cat. are capped yet. Although I believe Others, and Combat Skills will also have caps on them.

With the latest update the Job Specific merits have risen to a total maximum combination of 10, with one category capping at 5, making it possible to cap two things, or spread out twice as many merits, as before.
