Weapon Level Ups

I was wondering about how the Weapon level up system works. Is it based on the character's level in relation to the creature you are fighting or is it based on something else. If it is the latter of the two, what is the determining factor in that equation. I know that early on when you use a weapon, it levels up pretty quick, but if you use a weapon that you have little experence in with a higher level job, level ups are pretty much non-existant. Could someone pleaser shead some light on this confusion. Thank you in advance.

From what I've noticed, let's say your club skill at level 30 reaches 90 (totally pulling nubmers out of the air). You can obtain 90 on anything that would be high decent challenge or above to you at level 30 (you don't have to be level 30 to fight the level 30 monster for example).
Also, there seems to be a point of diminishing returns. Like if your club skill is 0 at 75, but can reach 200 and you're fighting mobs that are Even match or Tough to you at 75, hit or not, your skill ups may not come as fast as you like. This has been my experience, but I could be wrong.

this is true about the skill lv. 0 and at 75 it goes to 200+ i think. But honestly You would likely not be able to hit the mob. (Assuming it was a higher lvl mob) You would miss continuously. lol.

As long as the opponent checked 'it seems to have high defense', I have been able to skill up my weapon (as long as it's not capped).
I look for things that are 'too weak to be worthwile, it seems to have high defense'. This will skill up the weapon pretty quickly.

So High Def mobs = faster skill ups?

It's not that High Defense necessarily means "you can skill here!" It's just a good indication that your current skill sucks SO bad that even the defense of this incredibly weak mob is a match for your stats (which are gimped with your low skill.) But a melee job with a ton of acc/str can still get low evasion/defense on mobs they can skill off of, due to their overall stats being so high to compensate for low skill.
Here's what I always do to level my skills:
I've got 75BST. I wanna level dagger up just for fun. Currently at 176 Dagger.
Go to Skill Limits down under the Spell Search on the left. Punch in that I'm looking up Dagger, Beastmaster, 75. Ok, I max dagger at 230. I adjust level to 55. At 55, my cap would be 166. At 57, my cap would be 175. At 58, my cap would be 180. Found it! Level 58+ mobs will provide me with skillups for this weapon with my job's C+ rating. Once I hit 180 Dagger I'll have to fight 59+ mobs, etc.
Note that +skills don't change anything. If I had +20 dagger skill from merits, weapon/armor bonuses, whatever, I could *still* skillup on the same level mobs.
While you could just go to level 75 mobs and take all the guesswork out of it, the lower level mobs are easier to hit and will make for a more productive skillup session. Misses don't give skillups so I prefer to speed things up by whacking the lowest possible mobs that can provide skill. Damage doesn't matter however, as even a 0 damage hit can give you skillups. So it's all about the accuracy.

As mentioned above, you want to skill up on mobs that are the appropriate level
for the weapon skill
. This basically means moving to higher level mobs, as the skill is raised; the recommendations above make that easy, to check what level mob is generally considered appropriate for what skill level.
Skillups can go very fast indeed for very low low skills, if you have enough +accuracy to allow you to hit higher level skills. I can usually take a skill from 0-100 in Qufim in about 90 minutes, moving from worms there through the crabs and giants, and on up to the bats just inside Behemoth's Domain.
The higher the skill is, the harder it is to get gains on it -- this is true for weapon skills, magic skills, crafting, etc. For weapon skills, skillups to 100 are fast, while getting up to 150 is a bit slower. 150+ is a slower still, although it's generally easy for a higher level character to get in a coffer key hunting group or some similar setup to have a lot of level-appropriate mobs to skill on. Anything above 200 is quite slow... Dynamis is nice for skilling up these to cap, if you go in there regularly.
One other note: There was a change in the
October patch
, so that you
must
do at least 1 damage on a mob to get a weapon skillup, for melee weapons. So, you do want a weapon with high enough damage to never only do 0 damage; this also makes Crab mobs less useful for skilling up than they used to be.

Cuer, I was just levelling up my dagger on robber crabs (and its only 68) and I got many skillups doing 0 damage. You just have to hit the mob for a skillup, but you only get tp with 1 point of damage or greater.

Alright, I thank everyone that has posted thus far, now I have another question. As far as Acc. What stat should I focus on to raise it? I know that I can get Acc+ gear, but I was wondering all the same.
