Elemental Staffs

ok, I do understand that the elemental staffs add to certain spells, like Earth enhances Stonskin, wind enhances sneak/invis etc. But my question is with nukes. I use an ice staff for all elemental spells (Bliz 2, water 3, etc.) because of the +10 elemental magic and the +4 int. (I am a blm if you couldnt tell). But I read that using the staff that matches the spell (like water staff for water 3) adds 10% damage...so which is better?

If it is true that the certain elemental staff adds damage, then if you were casting water and used the water staff that probably would be a good idea. Of course I'm not a nuker I'm a DD, most mages I pt with have the Dark and Light staffs with them, however they are expensive so maybe that's why most only opt for the 2. Hope that helps.

I believe it DOES affect, which is why every mage I know has all the staves.

NQ elemental staves add 10% damage. HQ staves add 15%. We're talking blm nuking here. They also decrease the cost to keep out the corresponding elemental avatar if you're a smn...but thats another story.

If you're starting out as blm, you may not have enough gil to buy all the elemental staves. You should eventually get them all as an end game blm. I would start out with ice and dark staff and work your way up from there.

Your eventual goal as an endgame blm should be to have all the HQ staves (except for maybe Apollo staff) because you want to eek out as much damage as possible as a blm if that is your main job. You can slowly replace them as you have gil.

One thing to note is that you get -10% to other spells that are weak to the elemental staff you are casting. For instance, if u use ice staff, you will get a -10% damage to Aero spells.

Ice staff is good also because of the elemental magic boost of 10 and the +int, but in the long run, its really best to use the elemental staff that corresponds to the elemental spell you are casting.

Also, i do not believe that an earth staff boosts stoneskin...i've been told by multiple RDM that its based solely on enhancing magic.

enjoy

Definately makes sense to have them all then.

Its the elemental staves does work on enfeebling magic also?
Such like, wearing earth staff while casting slow, wear ice staff while casting paralyze...etc.
We have confirmed elemental staves help on nukes, so they are beloved by BLM.
As RDM, nuke damage doesn't affect me too much, I just hope this may increase the accuracy of debuff to land on mobs.
Anyone knows?

I THINK that it does, however I do not know for sure. I got all the staves at about level 62 and I have noticed an increase in stickage.

They help land enfeebles aswell. Rdm and Nin can use them to land slow/para/blind etc.

ok so equip the elemental staff that matches the nuke, instead of just using the ice staff that has a +10 elemental skill. Does the +10 elemental on the ice staff actually equal less than the boost of 10% given by matching staffs w/nukes?

The + 10 Elemental Magic is not going to affect your damage output at all. If you're getting seriously resisted, then you can equip it instead of using the nuke's corresponding staff. If you're not, you're best off using the corresponding staff. Most likely, once you get all the staves, you'll just macro them into your nukes. I honestly dont use my Aquilo's Staff (HQ Ice) for spells of other elements, only ice nukes and debuffs.

The elemental staves have been studied quite a bit, and it has been specifically shown that you will have fewer resists using the staff corresponding to the element of the nuke than you will using the ice staff with its bonus to elemental magic skill.

The best reference for this that I've seen is here:
ffxi.allakhazam.com/db/jobs.html?fjob=3&mid=1119513994257023935

Also, the equation for damaged absorbed by stoneskin has been determined. I don't have the link handy, but it depends on enhancing magic skill and MND. You can use an earth staff after you've cast stoneskin, but it will not help during casting. You should use a wand with +MND or a water staff.

You need to match the staff with the spell. The damage bonus greatly out weighs the skill bonus you get from the ice staff, and infact the Ice Staff with reduce your Aero III by 15%. I have all my staff changes macro'd into the macro for the spell. Even Aspir/drain spells are macro'd to be used with the dark staff
Macro goes as following

/equip main "Fire Staff"
/ma "Fire III" <t>

There is no waite time required between equipment changes and casting.

another usefull macro for resting at +15 hmp
/equip main "Dark Staff"
/item "Ginger Cookie"
/waite 5
/heal on

Good luck!!
