Summoning Magic Skill

Ok, I leveled my SMN to 20 and am in the process of fighting the avatars. I have spent a lot of time leveling my Summoning Magic skill and almost have it capped. The thing I dont understand is, a Galka SMN in my LS will do the same amount of damage as I will even though his skill is only 24!
Now, WTH?
I have wasted a whole day (4hours - RL) leveling this skill and now it seems that it does me absolutely no good. Has anyone heard if there is a point to this?
Oh, I have only beat Titan so far. 0/2 Ramuh, 0/1 on the rest, cept Leviathan(havent attempted).

There seems to be alot of disagreement on this subject.
These are some of the opinions I have heard:
1. Summoning skill only keeps you from getting interrupted while casting an avatar.
2. Summoning skill allows you to command your avatar from a greater distance and your avatar covers a greater area when using an area of effect or group effect bloodpact.
3. Summoning skill causes your avatar to do more damage on the whole, especially the blood pacts and 2hr abilities.
Take your pick really. I also spent awhile leveling my summoning skill and I see many other summoners doing the same. I have no proof that my avatars hit harder than someone with less summoning skill.

I did a whole lot of testing covering 80 skill levels and could not find a consistent difference in any area.

First, my BLM is 75. My SMN is level 1. I don't think I've even killed a mob with it. Now that that's out of the way...
My theory is that it's like Elemental Magic skill. Like ele skill, it's part of the magic skill family, and you level it the same way: by using it over and over. Here are some theories I've heard about SMN:
======== Theory #1: damage ========
Having high summoning magic skill will make you do more damage.
Rebuttal:
- Having higher elemental magic skill won't make you do more damage
- you said yourself this isn't true based on your experiences
===================================
======== Theory #2: melee accuracy ========
Having high summoning magic skill will make your avatar's melee attacks more accurate.
Rebuttal:
- there's a SMN AF (or JSE, can't remember) with a trait called "Avatar accuracy +X". Therefore if skill gave more accuracy, why would they have created this extra trait?
- I saw a lvl 65 SMN send Carby on an IT++ XP mob. Carby missed 11 times in a row, hit once, missed 7 times in a row, hit once, missed 5 times in a row, etc. I don't know what her summoning skill was, but I assume it was at least somewhat close to cap.
============================================
======== Theory #3: casting interruption =======
Having high summoning magic skill reduces the chances of getting interrupted while summoning an avatar.
Rebuttal:
If I get hit by a T mob while I'm at 0-15% or 75%+ casting of a nuke, I never, ever, ever get interrupted. If I get hit by a T mob when I'm between 15% and 75% casting, I always, always, always get interrupted. I haven't played SMN, but I did play NIN and I noticed it was the same when casting ninjutsu. I'd be very surprised if SMN was any different.
=================================================
======== Theory #4: resists ========
This is my theory. While having higher elemental magic skill won't make you automatically do more damage, it does reduce the chances that a nuke will get resisted (when a nuke suddenly does around 50%, 25% or 10% of the damage it had been doing up to that point, and the mob didn't put Shell up or anything).
Therefore my guess is that having high summoning magic skill reduces the chances that spells & bloodpacts (the ones that deal damage, anyway) will do less damage. Like I've said, my smn is lvl 1, so I have no clue if there is such a thing as a "resisted" Aero II/IV or Predator Claws, but if there is, then I'm pretty sure that's what it's for ^^. If there isn't...well...uh...then I have no clue :P

According to S-E, Summoning magic skill "lowers spell interruption rate and reduces casting time for elemental avatars." And that's
ALL.

When I said "elemental avatars," I meant the "XXXXX Elemental." ^_^; Sorry for any confusion.

According to some people on another MB, summoning skill has a lot to do with the Spirit summons.
it makes them cast faster and pick stronger spells when they are avaliable. i think it has been proven that summoning skill helps with faster casting, but there is no way to prove stronger spells.
i dont mean faster summoning the element. the elemental has a set time before it can cast magic, and that timer gets smaller as skill goes up.
