I had read somewhere that in order to get Fenrir as a summon you had to give the NPC the Whisper item from another summon quest once all the avatars had been defeated. Does that mean you have to miss out on one avatar to get Fenrir or did i get bad info. just curious.

You must defeat all of the Prime Avatars (not the lv 20 ones) and gain there whispers. Then you can get the Fenrir quest by 'trading' all of those whispers to an NPC (whispers are key items).

In short, you must defeat all of the Avatars and *not* recieve a reward (that means no summon) to fight Fenrir.

To add, you can defeat the prime avatars multiple times, so though you have to turn in your whispers from them all to get Fenrir, that doesn't mean you miss out on anything. In fact to get certain items later like evokers ring you need to fight fenrir again which means you must get all the whispers and hold them for a second time at least.

Yes, dora is right about it, and I'm from pandy to btw.

The way it works is this:

At lvl 20 you have the chance of soloing the 6 main ones, exception is fenrir. This is the a harder way then primes if you aren't high level! (I can solo the prime avatars, except fenrir and didn't like the idea of soloing them at 20 so I skipped it and got primes)

At lvl 60+ you can do Primes, these are easy with /nin or nins and a mage or two. At around lvl 60 though bring a full and strong party with experienced members. And be ready for the killer 2 hour with bar-elemental spells! Don't even bother debuffing them cause it won't work unless they are weak to it and you are 70+ with RDM/BLM and Elemental Seal.

After you started killing them here's what to do

For Primes:

For the avatar itself (except fenrir), go to BCNM, kill it
and head back to NPC, choose the pact and you get it. The next day (real life) after turning in the whispher you can recieve another fork.

For Fenrir: Ok hopefully you have Ramuh, Garuda, Titan, Ifrit, Levithan and Shiva already. Now you have to go to all of these and NOT turn in the whisphers! Then go and get the Moon bauble in Windy Waters. After obtaining the Moon Bauble you should go around and get the forks. Fenrir is level 85, and it by far the HARDEST avatar to deal with, I recommend 70+ for it.

For Evoker Ring: This is a level 71 SMN ring that is started in Norg, Mama Mia. So you shouldn't need to worry about this one for a long time. Forget the prime avatars really, a good summoner can solo all but Fenrir, it just takes some time. When you get the whispers go back to the NPC, and obtain the item for it, like Elder's Branch, Rust-B-Gone or Desert Light. The only hard one is the Anicent's Key which comes from Fenrir which can take like 3 smn to beat.

To sum it all up for everything for a smn: You need to beat the prime avatars at least 3 times and Fenrir 2 times to get the avatars and the ring. Other items like the belts, rings and weapons can also be done at the cost of that specific whispher. Some of these items are good like Fenrir's Torque and Fenrir's Stone and Garuda's Dagger.
