Except for Beastmasters, every job has a difficult time soloing for experience by level 30+. You'll definitely have a better bet getting in an xp group as a Rdm/Whm or Rdm/Blm, than trying to solo for xp. Using a Paladin as a subjob is never advisable, as it is a job that is useful almost exclusively as a main job.
Red Mages are powerful for soloing lower level mobs, once they have all their defensive spells. By and large that does not extend to experience, however; FFXI is not primarily a game for soloing xp, with the exception of Beastmasters, who run their own type of game.

He covered it pretty much... just wishing to add some details...
for RDM, if you want to increase your soloing capacity, sub NIN. Else, for parties, sub WHM or BLM.
And even there, soloing won't be exp-wise worth it. Yes, you'll be able to solo mobs a lot tougher then any other jobs could(except SMN and BST), but would spend like 5-10 minutes fighting a mob for about 100 exp...
NIN and RDM are great soloers for they have incredible defensive capacity... but do rather little damage. Plus, they spend so much time casting their defensive spell that they barelly get the time to hit the mob, making the fight even slower.
I'm SAM 59, and with WAR subed, I can hardly solo a Easy Prey. My LS leader, RDM70/NIN35, can solo Even Match mobs...
SMN with Carbuncle Mitts(reduce Carby's MP cost to 0) can solo IT mobs if he has enough room for it. But a single IT mob would take about 30-40 minutes to kill.
If you want to solo, BST is the only way. They usually get to force up to 2-3 mobs to fight one another and get very good EXP for it. ( There's multiple fighting strategies for BST. Most I'Ve seen only Charm 1 mob and send it against another. )
So over all, as a RDM 33, don't even think about soloing your EXP. get into a party. Subing WHM is your best bet for now, since your nukes wouldn't get much power yet. But still, get sure to keep your "Elemental Magic" stat caped. When you'll get closer to 50, RDM/BLM becomes very interesting when there's already a main healer in pt. You'll be a debuffer/refresher, but will also be able to do some Magic Bursts for over 300 dmg...

Cool, will stick with using rdm/whm combo for getting exp. I think ill lvl blm aswell to 25+ as you say it will make a good combo at 50. But will keep rdm/pld combo for fun and farming as played around last nite with it and was taking so little damage that i could chain 1 maybe 2 on even matches lol exp was very poor tho compared to partys ive been in. Thanks for the tips

IM sorry johny your wrong about that. bst can only have one pet like smn. the reason why you have only seen one with 1 pet is because thats how it works. now if you 2 pets fighting a monster, there is most likely another bst nearby because bst exclusive parties are better than soloing bst.
me and an LS buddy are duoing bst together and do non stop exp chains to #5 and #6 even though the exp is roughly 60-70 exp starting at exp #0 it is still fast exp.
